Default Questions on airbags and sensor removal for weight savings

It's time to remove more weight from my 2000 Z28. I want to ditch all the airbag stuff for weight savings.
Will the car still run if I simply unplugged and removed the bags and sensors?
Where are all the sensors located?
How well does the horn work without the airbag in the steering wheel?
How much weight am I looking at losing?

I'm also removing AC, going to lighter carpet, windshield washer fluid parts, tubular k member, and manual rack at the same time. Any more suggestions for weight savings? The k member is the last piece of suspension that's stock. I already have lightweight brakes and draglite skinnies as well. I've removed the speakers and have just the radio faceplate with the actual radio unit removed. Current weight is 3240 without driver and 1/8th tank of gas.

Pulling the airbags won't effect the way the car runs at all. You'll just have the airbag light on. To keep the horn your best bet is to swap to an older or aftermarket wheel. The airbag is the horn button on the modern wheel.

There's a weight reduction list in the top of this subforum that can guide you on weight savings per item.

I think I'll probably swap the wheel and go with the mwc lightweight steering column. I'll probably have to wire a toggle switch for the horn because they're really crazy about the horn working along with lights for safety inspection.

I'm going to need a rollbar after a while so a removable steering wheel will help in climbing in and out.

Passenger airbag and AC are good to do together bc they both require removing the dash.

Yeah I plan on getting everything at one time. With jobs like that I tend to do it all so I don’t have to go back. Like when I replaced the 10 bolt, it turned into replacing everything suspension and brake piece out back.

Back when i removed all of my HVAC and airbags, i just put a resistor in the airbag connector to keep the light from coming on. I foget the exact ohms, but never had an issue

I've done a little more since I made this list and she is down to 3050# w/o me. I still have stock K-member, PS, and all interior panels.

That’s a detailed list. I’m hoping to lose 100 with what I’ve got planned. Car weighs 3240 without driver and a S60

Wow. Well... hopefully I’m underestimating and I can get down there. Pretty much everything on your list I’ve done or plan on doing.

If you are never going to put it back (like me) there is a lot of little brackets, bolts, wires, etc that can be cut out. Hole saw and cutoff wheel are your friend. I even got the stock hood down to about 25#

Yeah my build is going pretty much the direction you’re in. Tell me what you did with your hood. Mine is the stock Z28 hood.

I only cut out the sections that are not glued to the top skin. My buddy took it all out of a Z28 hood and ruined it. It bowed up so bad on the first pass it scared him.

Oh that’s not good. I’ll probably go for a Sunoco 2” cowl.
