I'm almost back!
 

My motor is shipping out to me today from ARE, and I should have it in my possession Monday (7/29). It's been a long, painful wait since I initially blew my last engine up and caught my car on fire back in January, but it seems like things may finally be wrapping up. As a lot of folks already know, I did receive one motor from ARE already (~2 months ago), but it failed in 1 day due to a defective wristpin. Nick took care of everything on this replacement, including shipping charges both ways, and even a few upgrades he threw in for free. Even though I've had to wait for what seems like forever, I would still go through ARE again. Like PSJ says, "I'm an ARE man now."

I've changed quite a bit on the car, including a pin-on VFN 2.5" cowl induction hood, a Madman torque arm and chromemoly SFC's, and a transbrake/reverse pattern valvebody in the tranny. I also have one of Harlan's two-steps waiting to be installed once the engine is back in the car.

The new motor is somewhat "edgy" by most standards, as the compression is what most would consider a lot, and the cam is a fairly large mechanical roller. I am holding out on specific details until it's actually running again and I have a chance to get her dialed in just a bit. I will say that the motor is built to shift around 7800rpm or so <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I may end up having to change the converter, as I don't know if my 4500rpm stall JW is going to be enough (thinking 5000-5500rpm), but that's going to have to wait awhile.

It's going to take quite a bit of fiddling with LS1Edit to get things right I believe, due to the cam and the fact that I'm running no O2 sensors at all (will be running the car in open loop all the time).

In any case, it feels really good to be "almost" back, and I can't wait to get back to the track in my own car. I don't mind borrowing something to race occassionally, but it's just not the same...

awesome george! is that an all bore 382 solid roller? also, why did you go with an open loop system?

I'm doing the open loop thing because O2 sensors wouldn't last with the race gas I'll probably end up running most of the time (high compression).

Would you plese explain the open loop system. I am having trouble with my 02's. I have changed them 3 times already and my SES light come on again this morning. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

I run race gas most of the time. If I do run pump gas(93 octane) mixed with racing gas(104 octane). Probably the mixure is about 4 to 1.(Pump gas to race gas)

My compression is 12 to 1. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" />

Any chance that there's coolant making it's way into one or more of the cylinders? Those O2s shouldn't be fouling that often with unleaded gas.

Coach, in a nutshell what I'm doing is keeping the car in the same mode that it is in when it is first started (open loop), and does not rely on feedback from the O2 sensors for fuel adjustments. I think it will be better in the long run, since I shouldn't have to worry about the PCM adding/subtracting fuel because it thinks it needs to.

Colonel makes a good point though... Unleaded race fuel shouldn't take out O2's like you're describing, at least not so quickly.

Guys,

I just checked the water level and it is find. No change since she was at Thunder Racing at the end of June.(for the 2 cam changes).

Maybe, the motor is torqueing to much and the 02's are hitting something. I do have Hooker long tubes. Maybe, I need to put on a torque strap?

I will run a check again to make sure that it is the 02's. Iam sure it is the Hot Rod is running just find.

George, I can't wait to hear about your Hot Rod. You have been down since I became a member back in Jan. I have heard that you are one of the few that actully races their Hot Rod at the track. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" />

I wish one of u rich guys would fork up the money for a FAST,HOLLEY or BIGS SEFI system.

Then u could really take advantange of your setups.How come none of u have a SEFI on your cars?

You would also need to use their standalone wiring harness so that means emission stuff, a/c, possibly a gauge or two will not work.

$15? lucky...we are charged $25
