26 vs 28's
 

Sup y'all...

I was at the track today and a buddy was telling me how his car was down 2mph by going from 26's to 28's (3600 raceweight).

28's work great on the light cars and cars with a lot of gear, but for heavier A4 cars is it really necessary?

My 3490lb A4 car went 11.02@122.62mph today on a 1.50 in 1700DA, 78% humidity...

I am racing on 28x10.0x15 Hoosier slicks at 14psi.

Seems to me that 27's or even 26's would maybe work since my car is not super lite and it will not skate around like a 3100 lb car with the same power.

I have 4.11's and am going thru traps at like 6100 sometimes 6200 - seems way too low.

Also think my car would slow down (a lot) if I went to a 3.89 gear vs my current 4.11's?

I guess I am used to seeing nitrous car run 28's and grab the kit off the line but I don't make 550 ft lbs of tq off the line...

I mostly want to compare notes with heavy cars.

I'm sure I squeeze a bit more power from my combo but I don't think the 28's are going to help my 3rd gear pull, it's been killing it.

I'd go with the tallest 26". I think the Hoosier 26x10x15's are 26.4", that should work fine and keep you around 6600-6700rpms through the traps.

I've tried 28s before, I really hate them. They look ghetto and don't hook any better (for me). I'd much rather swap my rear gears and keep nice 26" slicks. Just my opinion. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Here's my worst 60 ft, a 1.59... from today.

Car went 1.59 today but with the Hals front and back I think I can cut a 1.4 with shorter tires...

I went 11.15 last year on a 1.53 and 26's... old combo.

John at this rate (.01-.05th per major change) it will only take 2-3 more major changes before you run 10s. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

John, why don't you see if you can borrow a pair of 26" tires at the track and compare them with your current tires?

I love my 28" ET Drags... I don't know how a 26" tire would work on my car.

I'll be sticking a 30" tire on the car if I put N2O back on it. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

3150 will need a 28, but perhaps 3500 won't.

Looks like you're overgeared to me. You shouldn't be pulling the tires on a 1.59 60' launch. Try a stock 3.23 gear end in that beast. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> PS what was your 1/8th mile?

I'm kind of wondering the 26 versus 28 myself. I'm running tomorrow (errr, today now), and only have 26x15x10 ET Drags. I'm thinking that there is no way I am going to spray out of the hole on that, so, if I spray on the passes, it is only going to be second gear and up.

One thing, though. ON the ET drags (Hoosiers are different), a softer rubber compound is used on the 26x15x10 than what is used on the 28x15x10.5Ws. I wonder if that is why there have been more than one 1.3x 60 foots on the 26" tires. It's just that I will run out of RPM if I don't go 28"

28's are a waste.There heavy and dont hook any better than a 26.John get rid of them and go back to a 26 and the 10 Sec slip will be yours....

I'm starting learn that bigger is not always better,I've tried countless stuff that was supposed to make me go faster and actually slowed me down.Stick with a small LT header,good cam and heads at 3400lbs w/4.10/26/TP4400 threw a cutout and you'll go fast...

I did a swap from 26 inch ET streets to 28 inch Hoosier drags on the same track. Even though traction wasnt great that day my mph was higher with the 28's and my ET slightly better with the 26. Strange.
give 26s a try it might easier to dial in your shift points too.
Were you hitting the limiter on the shifts etc?

switching to another gear i would think would slow u down a lot. a friend of mine ran 4.11's & ran 11.6-11.7 all day with a 3600+ race weight. went to 3.73 & a rollbar(added weight) ran 12.1-12.0 consistantly. the guy told me the gears killed him. but he made the switch because he was preparing for a blower.something to think about.

PSJ definitely do NOT change the gear. Just run the 26 inch slicks.

alright, that's for a heavily modified car. what about a stock internal car that had 4.10's? would it still be better to go with a 26" tall tire? or would that put it too high in the rpm band crossing the traps? (TP4400 converter)

My lowly 6-speed 3600 lb car cuts 1.48-1.52 no problem on 26" Hoosiers. That is even with a narrow 8" wide wheel!
