Whats the most effective style of launching in a 6 speed?
Explain the style in which you think. I want the style or technique thats gonna maximize my quarter mile runs. I want to get the best run that I can, but I need some opinions on launching. If you could, explain how you do it from start to finish, thanks. By the way, Ive got a stock 10 bolt with 3.42s.

i was on BFG d/r's and was dumping the clutch from 4k-5.5k depending on track prep. that was on the stock rear end too cutting 1.7x 60fts.

Re: Whats the most effective style of launching in a 6 speed?
I have a 99 Corvette Hardtop that I have cut a best of 1.51 60ft. and consistant 1.5's on M/T E.T. Streets. I have a centerforce dual-friction clutch, and HAL 12 way adj. shocks on all 4 corners, front sway bar removed also. I usually start with 10psi. of air in the rear tires and after the burnout they are about 11psi. This tire pressure seems to work the best for me but to some it moves around too much on top end of the track. I usually launch at 5500-5800 rpm depending on how well the track is prepped, and floor it and let the clutch out at the same time. This will take practice to learn how to hit the launch just right- but I started at 1.7's and now cutting 1.5's all the time and did not change a thing but practice different launching techniques. This way works best for me and my setup and hopefully it can help out. Good luck!!!

Re: Whats the most effective style of launching in a 6 speed?
The technique that I used was especially with the stock rearend:
1. Do a good burnout.
2. Pull into the pre stage beams
3. Load up the rearend.(this I did to remove all of the backlash from the rearend) I attribute my rearend living due to this. This is done by holding the brake and let out the clutch until you hear the motor bog down
4. Then ease into the staging lights
5. Depending on track prep and tires, launch the pig.(I launched on stock rearend from 2500-5500 drag radials to et-drags)with the 12 bolt I was launching off of the shift light 6400
Hopefully this might help

Do what roman says. My 10bolt has survived some vicious wheel hop and it was way more violent that the 4grand launch I did with the nittos.
The 10bolt is stronger than it should be. Drive it like you would for max ET and see what happens.

How you should launch depends so much on tire (both type and burnout), track (this is the biggest thing), and driver that it can't be easily defined. I have my method that suits my abilities on my tires (Nittos) with my gearing (3.42s) at my local track (not so good) that nets me mid 1.8s internally stock and at full weight but that info might be useless to you.
You six speed guys answer me this.... How is your driveline staying preloaded after releasing the brake with your right foot to stab the throttle? Am I missing something?

Hey Colonel
I hear what you are sayin. We cant preload the 10bolt like the auto guys but we can load it with a parking brake and punch the clutch b4 releashin the pbrake.
The key is to avoid backlash b4 the launch. What worries me is the shift or bouncin off the rev limiter durin a burnout.
Seriously, none of my launches were as violent as some of the wheel hop Ive xperienced.

Yeah, with the parking brake I can see it (I've done that), but without it you'd need three feet!
If your rev limit is set correctly, don't worry too much about hitting it during the burnout. It won't hurt anything.

Maybe he has a linelock?
I usually hold the brake and let the clutch
until it bogs and then push it back in a hair.
I only imagine this helps R/T,though.

I do a good burnout and usually dump the clutch between 3800-4200. I never did the steps mentioned in the post.Im not saying it doesnt work but I have 50 or so launches on my 4.10's and about 20 on my 3.42's. Ive cut countless 1.7 short times with the gears as well.

Re: Whats the most effective style of launching in a 6 speed?
Knowing what I know now,(I broke the 10 bolt and the posi in my 12 bolt) I would buy a 12 bolt or 9inch rearend. You maybe lucker than most and get alot of launches out of a 10 bolt but sooner or later you are going to break it. A M6 Hot Rod is just hard on the rearends.
I bring my rpms up to 6,500rpms. I have the pedal pushed in just so the car doesn't roll and when I see the 3rd yellow light start to come on I pop the clutch pedal and floor the gas. I cut pretty good lights and run 1.46 60fts.
It takes practice to race a M6 Hot Rod. Seat time is the key. Practice, practice and more practice.
Good luck to ya.

Two step at 6600rpm
Floor the Gas
Dump the clutch
(requires slicks and good suspension of course)
