What helmet are you using to protect your mellon?

I'm thinking it's time to stop borrowing my buddies snowmobile helmet and buy a dedicated racing helmet. But I see them selling for anywhere between $179 and $1200 Typically around $400-500 for a decent one.
So I'm wondering, what's everyone else here using?
What are NHRA helmet requirements for street cars running in the elevens / tens?

All you need is either an SA95 or M95 helmet for the moment, it will be updated to SA2000 or M2000. SA = cars, M = motorcycles, the number represents the year of certification. Having said that I use a G-Force SA2000 full face helmet and my wife uses an RCI SA2000 full face helmet. Both of these are about $220-$240.

I can honestly say that I have no idea why helmets have such a huge price difference. But, the Southeastern NHRA Tech had two great words of advice for me - Never make ANY sacrifices when it comes to a helmet or harness. Those are the two most important safety items in racing. These were the words of Al Witzel who had been a NHRA Tech for 25 years. He told me this while doing my chassis certification the week before Christmas. One week later Al passed away from stomach cancer that he wasn't even aware that he had.

LOL mike!!
i use a full face harley helmet. same helmet i use when i ride my Buell. harley gets a half shell brain bucket. lol
im looking into a better helmet tho, after seeing a fire with the driver not getting out for about 10-15 seconds do to cage/harness, i want a helmet that seals up a little better to protect my face. I also upgraded to a 3 layer fire jacket. and after 3 cars on the roof this year, i had no problem dishing out the $$$ for a good 10 point cage.
safty is very important to me. i dont want to get hurt doing what i love.

Very good points Brad!!! I'm going to buy a better helmet myself as well as a better fire suit. Single layer jacket ain't going to cut it no more.

My car is slow, but I just bought a Pyrotect Open face solid M2000 for $122.99 at helmetcity.com. My old man rides BMW's and turned me on to the site. I really like the helmet. I was borrowing helmets when I'd run, but I have a big mellon. Now that I have one that fits right, it is wonerful. Not too loose, but not like trying to stick a watermellon into a coffee can.

The reason there is such a price difference in helmets is because of the time and effort put into the helmets. DO NOT skimp on a helmet. Get a sa2000, or if you wait till the end of the year SA2005 will be out and will be good for 10 years.
I just got done ordering one of the "Budget" Sparco carbon fiber helmets for $5200!

This is where I got mine from. The closeouts are a great deal. I have a Bieffe. Can't recall the model right now.

I bought an Impact "Champ" by Bill Simpson, this year and I'm very happy with it.

But if you need to be the "Top Fueler" guy try this:

I saw this at a car show very cool helmet. Though a little to much for me.

I use an ARIA full face helmet, set me back 500 bux, caught it on sale, usually goes for 560. Some might say im crazy for buying that, but go buy a 100 dollar helmet, then try a 500 dollar helmet. The reason I got this was not because the way it looked, but it was more comfortable, lighter, better sweat control, a wider range of visibility both horizontaly and verticaly.

I have a HJC AC-10 to use while racing in my car. It is a Full face helmet specific for automotive use. (Automotive helmets have additional padding in them over motorcycle helmets, it hinders comfort a little but protects better and makes the helmet much more secure on your head. You won't have a helmet on in your car for more than 5-10 minutes at a time, motorcycle helmets are designed to be worn for hours at a time)
In drag racing, you really can't go too wrong no matter which helmet you choose, but I always recommend a few things. Full Face, Automotive racing specific, and Snell rated.
Nomex liner's are also REALLY nice to have.
I really like the Simpson Super Bandit series of helmets, and will be the next helmet I buy.
