Default 2.75 1st gear ratio upgrade for a TH350, worth the $ or gain?

I hear its a $600+ upgrade and that its not worth the money. I've also been told that the gain is very minimal if any, but could possibly hurt and he did not recommend it. This particular person states that its an "old school" upgrade back when converters werent as high tech. Now the gear swap back then is compensated with up to date, custom, high efficient, hard hitting, etc. converters. This is all from a very reputable tranny builder. What do you think?

If a reputable transmission builder doesn't recommend it, and doesn't want to sell it, why press the issue?

I would skip the $600 upgrade and just stick some more rear gear in it..

Did they indicate under what circumstances it could hurt you?
