New setup getting closer to completion, need some help. (200-4R to TH350)
Well I'm getting closer and closer to completing my swap. Tranny should be done tomorrow. I went with a Trans-King TH350, reverse manual valvebody, trans-brake, deep pan, JW Ultrabell, 36 sprag element, modified drum, and Red Eagle alto clutches/coleen steels. I'm gonna order the converter tomorrow from Protorque, not sure what stall it will have, but somewhere in the 5000 range. I've already recieved the Hurst Pistol Grip shifter, Lokar 36" dipstick, Wolfe anti-roll bar, and waiting on the BMR TH350 crossmember. So tomorrow I will have everything but the converter for the swap. However, I'm gonna need a bigger tire to handle the new setup and I'm thinking either 28x10.5W or 29.5x10.5W. With a 26" slick and 4.10 gear, I was right where I needed to be with my old setup, not sure if that will change with the new setup. So not sure if I need to upgrade my gear or not. Seems like 4.10 mates up good with a 26", a 4.56 goes good with a 28", etc. Anyhow, if I kept my 4.10, would a 28x10.5W be too much tire? If I changed the gear, then I want a gear that will go with a 29.5x10.5W because I dont wanna run anything bigger than that. So what do you think I should do? Thanks.

it all depends on how your engie is setup, in one car we run a 4.88 gear with a 383 and a t400 trans on a 28x10.5
on the ss car we run we have a 5.13 with a 30x9 radial with a 355 engine and a glide.
you need to run whatever gear puts your engine in its rpm nad for the most amont of time during a run.

How do I determine what rpm a setup will pass the traps at? I need to be passing at 7000 or so because I have a 7200 rpm rev limiter. Do you think a 4.56 is enough gear for a 29.5x10.5x15W? I want to run the biggest tire that I can that are accepted in most classes and I want the gear to match it.

Without calculating in tire growth and converter slippage with that tire and gear you will be doing 135mph at 7K rpms. Understand the tire growth will lower your rpm for a given speed and converter slippage will increase your rpm for a given speed.
Go to this website and the calculator on the bottom inside the red box will help you with gear and tire selections.

135 mph is a bit much for my setup. I'll probably be MPHing somewhere between 125-130, hopefully in the higher part of 120. There is gonna be slippage, but from what I've been told, the converter company that I'm going with has probably the best efficiency around being anywhere from 96%-97%. Also, I plan on running a 29.5x10.5, but I'm sure that tire will grow on the top end so we can call it a 30". However, from all the setups I've seen, I'm thinking a 4.56 may not be enough for a 29.5x10.5 tire. Also, for my power and speed, I'm thinking I really dont need the wide version. I'd like to pass as close to my shift points as possible for best results. Most that are running a 4.56 have 28" tall tires.
