MT DR's and no traction WTF???

I've got Mickey Thompson Drag Radials and I can't hook up. I'm only launching at 3,500 rpm and the tires just spin. They are aired up to 16 psi. I'm not doing much of a burn out but I don't think that could be the problem. My 60' times are right at 2.00. The rwhp should be around 430. What am I doing wrong?

MontereyLS1 Dec 4, 2005 03:27 PM

Get em HOT! Just like slicks, they gotta be good and hot before they will hook

Little G Dec 4, 2005 03:43 PM

Tell us about the suspension mods.

Try lower psi, like 14, and do a mild burnout. If it won't help, you may have some suspension issues.

NX_CaGEdApE00 Dec 4, 2005 04:13 PM

u must get them hot........ very hot.... start at 22psi and go down from there...

Mattsls1 went 1.57 60ft on them Auto, 3.42gears, 18 psi.....

NX_CaGEdApE00 Dec 4, 2005 04:14 PM

do your burnout in 2nd gear since u r a M6... 1st gear will not get them hot enough..

I thought I read a post in this section where madman said to only heat them up 25* over what the track is. I welded relocation brackets on a couple of weeks ago because I had some pretty bad wheel hop. I put the LCA at the bottom bolt hole and it eliminated my wheel hop, somebody said you should use the second hole cause the bottom hole will bind the torque arm somehow, I don't understand that. That's all I've done to the suspension. What I can't figure out is how some guys with DR's can do 5-6,000 launches, and I've got 275's and can't do a 3,500 launch. Should I think about ET Streets, or more suspension changes? Thanks

NX_CaGEdApE00 Dec 4, 2005 05:09 PM

et streets will be nothing better... just do what i said..... if that doesnt work u need Et drags,.....

every car is different

SSDriver Dec 4, 2005 05:54 PM

I'm hooking on a 150 shot of nitrous off the line with the 275/40/r17 mt et street radials, they hook. I read at MT web site to run those between 16 and 11 or 12 psi being the lowest. Start at like 20 psi and work your way down. Oh I used to spin them too, then I started doing a huge burnout and my car hooks dead nuts. Get those suckers HOT and they will hook. Stock suspension for me right now except for SFC.

I'm at 16 lb now, going to 12 lb at 115-120 mph seems a little scary. What rpm do you launch?

GOGO Dec 4, 2005 07:15 PM

I hooked last night at 18 psi with a mild burnout. My launch varied from 2-2.5K. BTW my best 60' was 1.62. Don't mind the sig, this was on MT DR's 275/50/15.

NX_CaGEdApE00 Dec 4, 2005 07:17 PM

just get them hot and launch from 5500 rpms +...... u will hook but u must burnout in 2nd to get them hot enough....

bigdsz Dec 4, 2005 07:44 PM

Hey GoGo, what kind of 15"rims are you using, did you have to grind down your calipers? I know the 15" Bogarts will fit but at $400+, not for me.

WILWAXU Dec 4, 2005 09:18 PM

Hmm... I've seen the best hooking with them at 20-22 psi. Cut 1.47 60ft with them at 22psi.

gator's 99TA Dec 4, 2005 09:57 PM

i have gone 1.47 60' at 21 psi. anything lower and the traction got WORSE. after going through a set i now believe that a big burnout is BAD for these tires. we have a local ls1 fbody car going 1.38 60' barely hazing the tires in the burnout box.

i have noticed the big huge burnouts made the tire greasy. so basically i totally disagree with most of hte above.

listen to me and wilwaxu - we have both gone 1.4 60' on these tires. crazy thing is they have so much more potential than 1.4s as seen with "ls1queen" on this board.

bigdsz Dec 4, 2005 10:18 PM

Alright Gator you are saying the same thing the Madman said about not overheating the tires, in fact I think he said just scuff them up to get off the sand and grit. So how are you guys doing it? For starters are you M6? Launch rpm etc? I am stuck at 2.0, I know the track sucks Orlando Speed
World, like almost zero prep for test and tune.I just need some ideas.

gator's 99TA Dec 4, 2005 11:01 PM

i like most of the quick radial cars are auto. orlando does suck. cant help ya there. come on over to BMP. we will get ya figured out. most m/t radials dont liek the shock. go down to 21 psi, do a clean up burn out, and then ride out the clutch untill there is weight distribution to the back. most of the time unless you are making huge power, a 3500 launch will bog the car. gearing helps out a lot too. you are sure you are spinning the tires and not the clutch right? that tire is enough to crush that spec 2

bigdsz Dec 5, 2005 06:29 AM

I'm already down to 16lb. At 3,500 rpm launch I once left a burn mark 105' long, other times depending on the asphalt my burns have been as little as 50'. If I bring my rpm down then I start to get more out of the power band. The clutch is grabbing fine although I will be replacing it with a Spec 3+ or 4 soon because I have a Mcleod scatter shield to install and my tranny isn't shifting right. You are right if you drag race an auto is the way to go, gotta love the repeatibility.

gator's 99TA Dec 5, 2005 11:31 AM

what you didnt catch was the fact that HIGHER PSI works better in these tires. going to 16 psi is BAD. i spun and wheelhoped like crazy when i went down to 15-16 psi. i went 1.4 60' at 20-22 psi.

Bryan @ Speed Inc. Dec 5, 2005 03:17 PM

i've gone 1.51 at 21psi w/ stock shocks/springs, 3,550 raceweight and m.t. drag radials. launching off idle... gotta love it.
