Best way to go 9's on pump gas? In a heavy car? Like around 3700 pounds with driver. Big cubes and spray? Turbo? |
Well if you want big power on pump gas... big cubes is the best way to go. The 572 crate motor is out now. But im not a fan of nitrous.. but thats me. |
Spray or turbo will work. |
Spray turbo and a built 427 will work. |
heads, cam a good driveline along with forged internals and a 250 shot should put you on the edge. I'm hoping to go 9.90 with a setup like that this season |
408 and a little juice! Mine is 3600# and I'm about there with a little fine tuning in street trim. I'll be there for sure with slicks and open exhaust. And I'm not really spraying that big of a shot. |
Bigger cubes makes it much easier , but it can be dne with a stock sized motor also  Mine is not quite 3700 but still heavy. I think the 4l60 will be the biggest problem when trying to go 9's @ 3700lbs. Good luck with it :drive: :) |
Yeah a 408 WITH A GOOD SET OF HEADS and a 200 shot would put you there all day long with ease. You should worry about your transmission first.. |
If I can get the car close to that level I will go TH400 and lighten the car more. |
why do you want to stay on pump gas? |

At 3500#'s I went 9.7x's multiple times in 1500-2000 DA on pump last season with 427 ci, and a 150 shot. Plan to be deep in the nines this year and on pump still. If I had it to do it over I would of built a turbo set-up, but 400+cubes + n20 will easily get you there. |
Turbo motor stock size to 427, low compression 8-1, run the meth/water injection, 2 stage boost controller, also a turbo motor is much easier on parts than running a motor and spraying it with a 200 and up shot of nitrous. Best way, turbo, cheapest way, nitrous. How long will a motor running to 5500 rpm with good parts, pretty much forever. I lived by kenny duttweiler's shop and have seen a ton of small blocks making 800 hp on pump gas @ 5500 rpm, with motors that are not even close to as good as some of the LS1 stuff today. When you can make 1800 horse power with a motor under 300 cubic inches, I'd say it is the way to go. |
