Default More gear and more tire, or less gear and less tire?

Im in the market for a 9" for my car right now and am wondering what your opinion on this is? Im looking at 4.10's, 4.30's or 4.56's. Car is an M6 with boltons right now, but will most likely have a cam this summer. It's mostly a street car, but it sees the drag strip 5+ times a year. Just trying to decide if I would go faster with a taller tire and more gear, or the inverse. Thanks.

Are you a M6 or A4? My car has a 224cam and a 3.73 gear and on the street I think it needs a 4.10 gear or even more. If you go with a larger cam I would not go with less than a 4.10 gear in a M6 or 3.73 with a A4.

My personal experience is this. Back when I was going for the bolt-on record I was constantly going back and forth with RAGEman who also had a bolt-on car. We both had M6's and pretty much the same mods. He went with 4.56's and a 28" tire and I went with 4.11's and a 26" tire and it seemed like he was consistently faster than me by about one tenth and one mph from that point on.

I would say taller gear and taller tire are faster.

bigger tire will yield a better contact patch and bigger gearing will help turn the bigger tire. -Mark

I plan to replace my 4.11 gears with 4.33s and stay with a 26-inch tire on my way from low twelves to high elevens.

I'm a big fan of biggest tire also. As long as it doesn't stick out and look ghetto.

My vote is big tire & higher gear.

but will a taller tire be harder to turn since its more rotational mass, or will the bigger gear help that out.

Im leaning toward a 27" ET street and the 4.56's right now. From the online calculators it looks like it will pull 120@6800. 115 with 26" drag radials.
