Pulled the door bars (pics)

Finally got those MF'ing door bars out. What a pain in the azz :bang: .

Had to make a tool by grinding down sockets and welding them to a piece of flat stock. I know about the other sockets that use a box wrench but this was free :D .

Pulled grommet in the door and the splash guard in the well to slide them out.

Pulled the cruise control too. Never use it anyway.

Door bars and bolts = 14.5lbs
Cruise control = 5lbs

Current total = -19.5lbs
:)

Here's a link to pulling the inside door panel off.

Can I borrow that tool ya made in a month or so?

I love how you pulled them out through the door, by taking off the inner fender. NICE! I did not think of that. I just cut them into three peices with an angle grinder through the larger opening on the inside of the door. :thumb:

You have to get a new throttle cable when removing cruise control, right? I have TCS too

If you try and cut the door bars out with a dremel it will probably take more time than unbolting them.

Don't need a new throttle cable if you don't have ASR/TCS. 1 cable for the throttle then there's another that goes to the cruise control. Just need to unplug and remove.

ASR/TCS cars go through that other "solenoid/control" by the battery. Not sure what's involved with the cruise delete in that case.

Don't need to make a special tool, you can buy what you need at Sears.

Search, I know I posted pictures.

if you can get that big tool in there i think you would be able to get a ratchet wrech in there and do the same job

im not going to cut the bars, that would be awfull long.. i would cut the front bracket and unbolt the rear one..

Now.. i would not know how to pull it off the door on that case...

but... i guess i will take my time instead of getting frustrated..

If it was that easy it would be done that way

Go ahead and try it and see what conclusion you come to ;)

Attached is the pic of the "Wrench Sockets" that I used.

The issue you run into is the bolts are recessed into the curved portion of the bar.

The door skin is right along it leaving very little room to work. Getting a standard wrench/socket onto it isn't happening.

Working blind through the speaker hole doesn't help either.

The "wrench sockets" that "SScam68" posted are where it's at. I didn't have any and like I said, I made mine for free and it only took a few minutes for me to do.

I took the door bars out of my 95 Firebird with a thin Craftsman ratchet, both front and back with no problems. I told my friend how easy it was and I had no idea why people were grinding sockets to take them out. We did his 02 Z28 and it was not the same story. We had to grind down a 10mm 1/4" socket and use a wrench adapter with a ratcheting wrench. Once that was done they came right off.

I cut a 1 3/4" hole in the back side of the door and covered the hole with an electrical box plug from Home Depot. I painted the plugs artic white so they dont look too bad.

What size sockets did you use?

Thanks

Firebirds are a ziilion tomes easier then camaros, the door skin is way closer to the bar on the camaros. It took me a couple hours and some hacked up tools to do the camaro, my firebird took like 10 minutes a side.
