First time down the track was in 1984, I went 13.50 something in a 69 Camaro. I thought I had an 11 second car, cause I had beat several so called fast cars on the street. I found out they were full of sh*t. It took a while but by 1988 I had the 69 running 10's and still very streetable. I've gotten faster very slowly over the years, currently in the 8's. I may not ever see the 7's, but you never know.

I made 4 passes in my '69 that's a lame street car running 15's... Then 6 months later cold turkey I hopped in my race car that I had just bought and ran a 6.02 w/ a 1.32 60 ft in the 1/8, needless to say my butthole was tight before that pass lol
That 2.14 to 1.32 60ft in the matter of two passes is a dousy
I don't think there's a right or wrong way to do it. Obviously gradually getting up to speed is the best route but I was at the track every weekend since I was 13 and knew everything about what goes on during the pass, it was just a matter of experiencing it.
I'm hoping to get a ride in a car running 5.0's or lower in the 1/8 this year, just a matter of sucking up to the right people I suppose.

I think starting out slow will make you more aware of your surroundings as you make a pass down the track, and you will get more comfortable making steady progress as opposed to jumping into a quick car that you don't know how to handle. I started out in a 17 second Chevelle in 1992, and didn't crack off a 12 second pass in my Nova until 1999. I think it was a good call as it allowed me to get used to each power level and the responsibilities that go with it. Just don't drive over your head, and don't be afraid of not going full potential until you are ready to.

First ever 1/4 mile pass was an 11.90, was running 11.40s a few passes later. Was in my current car. Couple weeks after that I cracked a 10.90 and was extatic. Hopefully I can see a high 9 this year.
