Powerglide converter

Im about to swap my 4l60e out for a glide. im running a forged 347 with a trex and good heads, its making about 480hp right now on motor but i plan on spraying around a 200 shot on it off the line. I'm also at around 3000lb race weight. whats a good size converter to run with this setup. would a 3800 be enough? i still want to keep the car somewhat streetable (maybe 30 miles a week). im not planing on going with a trans brake right now but i may in the near future. thanks guys

also i have a 4.10 rear gear

I'd go at least 4,500, anything less and it won't leave for shit racing on the motor. You can get away with less converter on the nitrous, P/G setups and that size cam and rpm range it is going to want a higher stall, especially with only a 4.10 gear.

IMO 3,800 won't cut it.

even with a 26"tire, i mainly do 1/8th mile racing

i doubt a 3800 will work eather. my last converter was 5500. and i sprayed 300 on that. I also had a 410, 3250 race weight. circle D>> or someone can build u one. just give them all your specs.

with a trans brake in it could i get away with a smaller converter?

That will just shock the tire quicker and a little harder, it won't leave in the rpm range you need to be in to get maximum acceleration out of the hole.

The point of a converter is to get the car to leave close to the peak torque. If you rev to 7,500 and peak torque is 5,400 you'd want something close to 5,500, the further away you go (lower) the slower it will be out of the gate.

When you go to a power glide it's like trying to take off in 2nd gear, seriously.

We have a 6,000 stall in our P/G car which makes peak hp at 8,200.

Now on the nitrous you can get away with it, because your peak torque with nitrous happens when you activate the nitrous.

You hit the button at 3,500 that's your motors peak torque.

I would give the guy's a call that is listed in my sig! I have one of there converter's and love it. They are very helpful and actually ask for all of your info on your setup, were some of the other companie's just send you one that they think will work!

4000 motor stall with 4.10's won't be a complete dog, especially at 3000lbs. A 200 hit might flash it to 5000-5500. If you're shifting at 7000-7500, that will be a slick setup.

Doing the glide is a real delicate combo vs. a 3 speed. You basically have to make it a dog on motor and it will work nice on the hose and be consistant with a small tire, etc. I have this combo right now and it's definately streetable. I can't even break the tires loose with my 3000 stall. No joke. On the hose it comes alive. I'll be trying my third converter this spring to finally "get it right". I went from 5000 to 3000 and now 4000 on motor. 30 miles is a cakewalk. PTC is so highly reccomended that I'd even reccomend them. Goodluck!

What are you looking to run on gas and on the motor?
