Default in what gear at 1/4 mile mark?

I say you want to pass through in your 1:1 ratio gear (3rd for A4s and 4th for M6s)....

"other" people in my club say you want to pass through in 3rd with your M6....

Ideally (this means, geared correctly), you are correct.

3rd gear?!!?

What's their idea of a redline?

There are some exceptions, but the vast majority of (even) modified cars I've seen will be beyond the limits of their valve train if they try to finish the quarter in 3rd in an M6 car.

I tried hitting the traps in 3rd gear with my '03 Cobra. It has 3.55 gears and I took every gear to about 6900rpm. I fell short of the finish line by quite a distance. Needless to say, the run was a wash.
