Default Thunder Racing's Brand New Stroker Cam is Unleashed

We just finished up a customer's 383ci build in his 2001 m6 T/A. Here is what it left here with:

Thunder Racing Custom Built 383ci Motor w/ Callies rotating assembly
-Trick Flow 225cc Cylinder Heads
-Thunder Racing New Stroker Cam: 247/251 .624/.632 112 LSA
-QTP 1-3/4" Long tube headers(Customer previously had)
-Fast Intake Manifold w/ Fast "Big Mouth" Throttle Body
-Racetronix Fuel System
-4.10 gears
-Custom Speed Density Tune

The car ended up making 537 RWHP / 488 Torque on a MUSTANG DYNO that we used at Total Performance Solutions down the road. Needless to say we are overly thrilled with the results. The customer left out last night with a huge grin from ear to ear.

Here is a link to the dyno run itself:

I hope to grab the dyno graph off of TPS later this afternoon so I can post that for everyone.

At what rpm did the peak numbers hit at? Also, how flat was the torque curve?

The engine peaked at 62-6300. That is one reason the combo worked out so well. The stock style intakes work best when the cam is timed to peak in that range. I will get a dyno graph posted tomorrow. The torque curve is phenomenal as we were able to drive the car with the stock 3.42's very well. It was much more fun with the 4.10's though

Thanks for all of the props guys. I was a little stunned to see these kind of numbers myself, especially on a Mustang dyno. I was just looking for 500. I am building another identical engine right now (going in an S10... ) and should have numbers shortly.

Thanks,
Shane

Both the Fast intake and Trick Flow heads were straight out the box

damn those are amazing results. +1 on what compression?? Also does it have stock rear end still?? I have always wanted to stroke my ls1 to a 383 and have most of the supporting mods already and this keeps inspiring me haha.

Holy crap!! This is an amazing working combo. Imagine if the heads and FAST were ported, and maybe some 1 7/8 headers.........great numbers.

You mentioned power peaked around 62-6300. Does power flatline for quite a ways after that? Upper 6k?

Excellent numbers!

I've thought about going 383, but a 402/408 short block would be much easier as far as down time, etc, and I could put my motor away for later use. I guess it's gonna depend on if I go bigger because I want more poweror because I blow my motor, lol.

The compression was just over 11:1. The power curve pulls out nicely past 6500. We ended most of the pulls at 6600 since the customer wasn't really interested in pulling the motor over that. The cam would be fine to 7K. We saw no valve float and are using our stock rocker kit with the TFS heads.

I'll get John to post a graph shortly.

Thanks,
Shane

I'm very curious to see the graph. You have 8*s more int/exh duration and 19 less cubic inches. 225's vs my 215's certainly helped. I say this because I was thinking bigger but due to my specific goals of near daily driver capability we opted to go smaller, and I wanted more power TORQUE sooner. 420 rwtq at 3000 rpms. Hence the curiosity ............

Again great results. How's the drivability ? Any surging, bucking, or stalling ?

I think more than a few people will be pleasantly suprised at the torque curve from a cam of this size especially on a small bore motor. The pulls were made from about 3400-6500. At 3400 the car is making 420 RWTQ and averages 438 over the entire pull. Torque peak of 477 occurs at 4960. My web guy is getting the graph for me now.

BTW, driveability is excellent with the speed density tune. No bucking or surging whatsoever. A/C works well and the car idles like a top.

Thanks,
Shane

Thanks for the update Shane. What would you think about the numbers (how much higher) if the owner were to have you guys port his intake, and swap to a 1 7/8 header? Or does he have a cutout for the times he needs a few extra hp ?

Got me thinking cam swap possibly. Doubt it, because the car runs so well I don't want to mess it up. LOL. Never happy, I know.
