Dyno Results..something doesn't seem right, thoughts?

Hey guys,

Just finished my car and had it tuned on Monday. I feel like I should be making more power than what i ended up with, my mods are in my sig. I realize that i don't have LTs or a 85mm MAF and I need to get them, but the numbers seem low to me. I did have a buddy port my stock manifolds before putting them back on, im sure this didn't get me much but just thought i would mention it. This was on a Dynojet dyno, tuned by Beyond Redline in Green Bay, WI. Thoughts anyone?

355HP@6100
344TQ@5200

The car definitely has a noticeable power gain over stock and it's fun to drive but I guess I was expecting somewhere closer to the 375WHP mark for what I have.

Thanks!

Heads and cam don't do you much good trying to exhale through manifolds which are a major restriction on a stock car.

Have a graph? What RPM did the pull go to? 6100rpm is low peak but it will be partially due to exhaust restriction. Could also be floating valves up top if it won't rev higher.

SeeSeven May 16, 2012 03:25 PM

I wouldnt worry about it too much till you fix your bottleneck. cam/heads dont respond well to stock manifolds. and remember dynos are just a tool. what do you run at the track?

Black_Thunder_00WS6 May 16, 2012 03:35 PM

I dont have the graph in a postable format right now. The pull was up to 6500 (rev limiter). The power didn't drop off much after 6100 but that was about its peak. I'm sure not having LTs is hurting me but I guess I wasn't expecting it to be affecting the power that much. They are Patriot's fully assembled heads with dual spring valve springs, Comp Cams pushrods & LS7 lifters.

Haven't taken it to the track yet.

RedRocketZ28 May 16, 2012 03:45 PM

You need LT's in a bad way. Can I ask why you don't have them?

Black_Thunder_00WS6 May 16, 2012 03:52 PM

I don't have LTs because I ran out of $. Needed the $ I had left to get the car tuned to drive, didn't want to have it sitting any longer with the weather getting nice here. I will certainly get them as soon as I can, I wasn't expecting my tune to cost me $800. I guess i'm not really worried about the numbers I got, more just wondering if you guys think these are about what I should be expecting without LTs at the moment.

Thanks for the reply's!

$800.00 for a tune?!:bomb:

Did God himself come down to "re-touch" this motor?!

Black_Thunder_00WS6 May 16, 2012 04:04 PM

Yeah..$800. $220/ hr. + $100 for license. It's pretty much the only tuning shop close to me. Not to many places in WI, at least that I could find. These guys have a good reputation around here too.

In hindsight I wish I wouldn't have wasted the money on the Harland Sharp RR's & just got the trunion upgrades for the stockers & got LTs instead..oh well.

CamaroZ28_LS1 May 16, 2012 04:14 PM

get headers, you can't take in air and expect to move as well through stock exhaust manifolds. it chokes the shit out of the motor.

Who the fuck did your tune??? God damn that is expensive...

ddnspider May 16, 2012 04:14 PM

I wouldn't be surprised to see you pick up 30+RWHP with a good set of longtubes and real exhaust......PS, tuning is supposed to a fixed price unless its some large HP power adder car. Aka, $800 is outrageous for a small heads/cam car. You could have bought HP Tuners Pro/EFI Live and a wideband for what you paid for that tune.

RedRocketZ28 May 16, 2012 04:28 PM

I hate to pour more salt in your wound, but $800 is absolutely insane for a tune.

karpetcm May 16, 2012 04:33 PM

I would've waited to get the LT's and then go for a tune even if its nice weather and you wanted to drive it at 800 for the tune that would better be my first and last tune for a while, lol. Dont worry OP, once you get LT's on there you will see a good gain.

thunderstruck507 May 16, 2012 04:39 PM

Wow...

I felt like crap paying $450 for a tune. Since you have a wideband you could always get a Frost mail order tune, just might take a couple tries to get it right. The worst part is it will have to be retuned for the headers. I really hope you get free touch ups for that.

But until you know what it makes once it can breathe, you're shooting in the dark. I would be shocked if it didn't gain ~35rwhp. Which still seems "low" but the dyno itself could be stingy.

Slowhawk May 16, 2012 05:03 PM

The manifolds could hurt a bit but your numbers look like they could be from a pull in 3rd gear instead of fourth.

Gunslinger09 May 16, 2012 05:24 PM

Yous should have done headers before the heads. The car would make more power with headers, stock heads and a cam than it does with your current setup.

CamaroZ28_LS1 May 16, 2012 06:08 PM

I am thinking with his set up, he should be right over 400whp with LT's added. I made 390whp on stock LS6 heads, 224r cam and 1 3/4 headers. Added a ported FAST 90 and 92mm TB and made 404whp on motor.

Black_Thunder_00WS6 May 16, 2012 06:58 PM

Thanks for all the opinions everyone!

I agree that $800 for the tune is a lot, but like I said before, there just isn't any other place for me to go in my area. Also, my original plan was to tune the car myself using my wideband and a friends JET DST software (he has a LT1 T/A). There ended up being an issue with his PCM so we never got to try the JET software before using it on my car. Long story short, the JET software sucks balls..especially compared to HP Tuners or EFI Live, and there is almost 0 support for LS cars with it. So I decided to get the tune done by the shop here. I am happy with the work they did & everything, not bashing them in any way, I just agree that the price is high. Mail order tune might have been a good route too but I guess I just didn't feel like shipping my PCM out several times before everything worked right.

All in all though, it sounds like everyone agrees that I should get to my 400WHP goal after LTs & MAF, which at least makes me feel a little better about this whole thing. Once I get some more money I'll have to see if anyone on here is looking to sell me some LTs.

Also, the dyno pulls were in 4th gear.

Thanks again!

I am thinking the stock MAF should support 400whp no prob but then again I bought my SS with a SLP MAF...

I agree, but I guess if I can find one for $100 or less when I'm ready to finish this thing, I might as well put it in.

Frost can send you a computer at an extra cost which isnt much, plug it in if it works fine meaning runs good and have good a/f then your good if not hold on to the computer you have now and send back the one he sent to you for a re tune. Knowing him at the most it will take is 2 tries especially if you have a wideband. He has excellent customer service and gets back to you if you have any issues or questions and is very knowledgable with our cars. I have a spare computer at home, if i need a specific tune i just send him that one and its done, no down time.
