Improper washing is the biggest culprit. On top of being black (shows everything) the lexus paint is a little bit soft, so its more prone to this kind of damage than say an audi. The car was bought about a year ago, used and dealer prepped. Dealers don't know how to detail a car properly and once you strip the wax off and get it under some lights its shows everything. Lighting is key to seeing the damage in its entirety, on the road you won't see it in as much detail. My friends wife just drives the car, so he's gonna have to keep up on it.

At a minimum wash a car using the 2 bucket method and toss a couple grit guards in them.
