Question about registering a car in NY with voided title

Question about registering a car in NY with voided title So I have a question about registering a car in NY.
Helped a friend buy a car as a station car for relatively cheap.
The car was sold through a mechanic where the original owner left the car with a signed title and tax form signed.
The friend signed his name on title immediately, then scratched his own signature and put their parents because thought was to get it registered under the parents name for cheaper insurance.
The NY State dmv said the title is voided.
The mechanic himself is having a hard time getting in touch with original owner since the original owner would be able to apply for duplicate title.
Anyone have any advice what other options are available?
