Angry son of a b... rear-end problems - AGAIN!

Well, last winter dealer rebuilt my rear twice, second time it was silent until recently. It's acting up again and will be going back. The only reason why I'm taking it to the dealer is I still have an extended warranty. Last year they covered everything including a car rental with no deductible.

I'm not thrilled about bringing the car back, but I don't want to spend the money on a new rear - yet. I'd love to have Slowhawk and crew set me up with a 12-bolt.

Oh well, just had to vent...

if funds are low and gm will cover it just get it rebuilt again and again and again and again

a couple of our techs went to class in july and said alot of the return customers with rear issues is due to a bad housing itself and will never be righ tif that isnt replaced
is it gmpp? or an aftermarket warranty?
price out a 12 bolt and bring that to the dealer and say for less money you can do this and i know it wont come back sometimes an aftermarket warranty will work with you like that. worth a shot none the less

interesting about the housing. I have no problem with them rebuilding it over and over if it's covered. my extended warranty (non-gm though) covers me until Nov 2007 or 91,000 miles - last rebuild they paid for it all including rental. I currently have 56,000 on the clock.

GM is covering this rebuild, not the warranty company. I should get my car back early this week. We'll see how well it holds up this time...

Has the same tech person done the re-build every time? Sometimes a lack of competency can be involved.... See if you can set up a appointment w/dealer to talk to factory service rep. Might help get you a complete new housing, etc. WJ

Yes, same guy. But I know this time they will be spending as much time they need to get it right. We'll see.

Talk to the GM rep. Insist on a complete new rear this time. If the same person puts the new parts in your housing again, theres SURELY no guarantee it'll be right. W/complete new rear sent in on a pallet from GM, you KNOW the setup inside will be right. I know at least 1 person who went thru same as you--3 times before they changed complete housing. Then, and only then, was the problem solved. There are some people who cannot just get the setup just right--so it will STAY quiet. WJ

Just buy the 12 bolt already and drive the car further than your house to the dealer.

i agree even with a new housing theres no gurrantee, they still have to set it up. it comes empty after that production year. two of our techs went out to a rear end class this past july they will put in a new housing but still set up at dealer. i say once you get it back and its quiet for a day pull it and sell it as cash torwards your 12 bolt hell the extra money is worth the less hassel

this is why i have a 9" right now

When my friend's new warranty 10 bolt arrived at dealer it was complete--not a empty housing. Axle-to axle, less backing plates. Most dealers do not have a good rear axle setup man w/ alot of experience under their belt, cause they're not paying these people enough to get and keep the best guys. WJ

I'll be picking up my car tomorrow morning - got the call late today. Dealer mentioned that I need rear brakes/rotors - some metal to metal contact. First, I'm surprised at this as I still have a lot of meat on the *original* front pads; can't believe my rears are that worn unless there's a bad caliper. I just looked at all 4 corners when I swapped to the snow tires 3 weeks ago, but didn't look closely.

Now for the shocker. Dealer wants $600 to replace rear rotors and pads! You have to be kidding! Jesus, I feel bad for those who can't do this themselves. I will no doubt be doing this myself as I've always done this on my own cars. GM rear pads $65, plus the autozone aimco(duralast?) rotors everyone talks about, about $120 for the pair. I can't believe the markup on some of this stuff.

Dealer prices are killers. Try going to the parts counter sometime...A poor schmuck off the street, who has no discount privileges, will pay 10-12 dollars for a $2 spark plug. Like everything else, you have to know someone.... WJ

If I decide to keep the car after it's paid off, the Slowhawk crew would be doing more than a rear-end swap...
