In NY what does Expressway meen to you?

In NY what does Expressway meen to you? Just drove up to Long island yesterday, just wondering what the speed limit is for? and why they named it a expressway..

All commercial roadways here on Long Island are called expressways (mainly trucks and cars if you choose to drive on the expressway). Parkways are soley for cars, no trucks allowed.

The speed limit is normally a goal to achieve, once in a while 
I make the commute from LI to NJ 6 days a week... It's not fun 
Hey, sometimes if you hit the LIE right after midnight you can do the speed limit.. but then remember the construction that shuts down the LIE and makes you go on the service road with seemingly 300000 people that also drive in the wee morning hours.

I was on 278 that Pete and steve had me take. Lets just say with a car trailer and truck it was a Adventure. I was called some names by some people that I haven't even heard before LOL..
