Who's Running No Cats in MA?

Hi, I posted this up a while ago, and I am posting it again. I am in the process of buying a set of kooks headers with a off road y-pipe. I am going to be running no cats. I can get a sticker no problem with out them, but has anyone ever gotten pulled over and a ticket for no cats? What can they do if you have no cats? Thanks, and go PATS! Ryan

SuperSport4life 01-14-2007 05:37 PM

I don't know about in MA but in NY if they want to check no cats they can give you a 1k fine for every peiece of emissions equipment you are missing. So that would be a 2k fine for no cats probably the same or simliar in ma. :eek2:

Slowhawk 01-14-2007 07:05 PM

I don't know anyone that actually runs them.

2000LS1TA 01-14-2007 09:55 PM

I hope MA isn't the same because my car is gonna be missing the EGR, AIR, and the Cats!

slayer_taunu 01-15-2007 01:26 AM

as long as you dont throw a code, and your car isnt absurdly loud, you'll be fine... most shops are too lazy to actually crawl under there and check. ask around for people that live near your town to get a reference for a nice and lazy shop. i know a good one in danvers, but thats a little far from you.

BTLFEDSS 01-15-2007 05:40 AM

Haven't had any on my car in about a 3 years, and i've had no problems

98hardtopSS 01-15-2007 11:00 AM

i want to do the same thing i have long tubes and a catted y right now but i would like to do without them....stickers seem to be an issue for me though as i got 3 violations last year and it is killing my insurance, i had a buddy at a dealership get me one but every shop told me they wouldnt even look at it because it had altered exhaust

BlackScreaminMachine 01-15-2007 11:16 AM

In CT i never ran them except when i had to go through emissions, we have DMV cops that will check and if you are without, automatic fine and immediate inspection required.

2000LS1TA 01-15-2007 03:19 PM

Thanks for the replies guys. There are two WICKED LAZY shops that are soo close to me, 1 in Charlton, and 1 in Oxford. As long as your not throwing a code, and your lights work you got a sticker :jest:

giant016 01-15-2007 05:41 PM

Could you put some cutouts in the header? That would be some loud ass shit, and if you put them high enough on the header they'd be hard to see without putting the car on a lift. You could run open cutouts all day with a catted Y behind it. When they pull you over everything looks stock, but when you open them up you'll have the performance of a ORY. IT might be really hard to do, I'm not sure...just throwing out ideas.

2000LS1TA 01-15-2007 06:52 PM

Would a cop actually look under my car??????

Slowhawk 01-15-2007 06:58 PM

It's not the Cats but the Loudmouth that gets you in trouble :judge:

z28bryan 01-15-2007 07:21 PM

Damn that's going to be a loud setup. LTs, no cats with a loudmouth? You might want to spend a few extra and get a magnaflow or something along with that.

2000LS1TA 01-15-2007 08:42 PM

I was probly gonna put a borla or magnaflow "resonator" on it instead of the loudmouth "resonator"

Yes, it has happened to a friend of mine. Rare, but it happens. Just keep the cats and save yourself the trouble and the smell... Get high flow cats that only restrict ur hp by like 3-5... its not a big deal. Im goin h-pipe with hi flow cats and bullets. I think it'll sound really nice. If i dont like that then ill get 1 chambers.

No offense, but I'd edit out those shop names.

You never know whos googling stuff, and youd be surprised at how many hits this site gets.

IMO, if you have an in with a shop, keep it to yourself or PMs. I'm sure nobody wants to get screwed. They take this stuff seriously now...

Other than that, your car is going to be loud as fack, with an ORY and Loudmouth. I get away with my LTs, ORY, and Hooker. But its still loud as hell. You have to pick and choose your spots. It really depends on the local PD, and how lienent the guys are out on patrol.

DannoWS6 01-16-2007 07:08 AM

Try LT's, ORY, and GMMG. loud and stinky, but I love it.

I pull the cat's out for the track, but I might look for a good highflow setup instead.

OK here;s the deal It is a federal offence to take cat's off of a car that was born with them. I do not have them and I run during race season A loud mouth with a dynomax bullet. When I go for inspection the dynomax stays on and I put my stock SLP cat back on. All my exhaust sounds are in my sig. I say If your not an idiot and go beating the car around town you'll be all set. Because It can get retarded loud. The police hate that even though there Harley is louder not there cop harley the one in there garage. I'm actually think i'm going to go with a true dual set up with borla xr1's I think it's quieter than my loudmouth.

2000LS1TA 01-16-2007 08:29 AM

I think I am gonna buy a set of stainless high flow cats, gut em, put em on the end of the header, cut the difference off the y, and put the y on the cats so it looks like I have some :)

jason02Z 01-16-2007 09:05 AM

im running no cats..exhaust dumps right before the rear end for now its kind loud somtimes :)

its also a federal offense to even MOVE the cats from their stock locations. that means that if you get LTs and get a catted Y-pipe, it is STILL illegal.

2000LS1TA 01-16-2007 09:14 AM

oh F$&K what should I do?? I can get a set of stainless cats on ebay for like 80 bucks and gut em. I know they will be ebay quality, but they will just be for looks. Will it just be good insurance??

sschoeffler 01-16-2007 09:16 AM

Thats pretty ghay

Tracer X 01-16-2007 09:24 AM

Tell me about it, MA sucks!!! But I am only 18 so I'll be here for a few more years at least, and then NH FTW :judge:

F-Bobby 01-16-2007 07:57 PM

well i dont have an ls-1 but i figure my input is still worth something. IM running Longtubes, No cats, 2.3/4 to 3 inch y pipe and a flowmaster 80 series. No one even looks twice at my car when i drive it, unless im really on the gas. then you can hear me coming from a good 200 yards away. as long as im not hammering on it it really isnt all that obnoxious. i guess it really depends on how you drive the car and even more then that, what the car looks like. Cause if its a cop magnet then a loud exhaust isnt gonna help you at all.

2000LS1TA 01-16-2007 08:02 PM

Yeah, it is a cop magnet, especially with an 18 year old behind the wheel :drive:

I could get you a sticker in peabody! kind of far away, but it can be done. As far as cops pulling you over and loking under the car, not likely in Ma. We have some of the laziest cops in teh country.

2000LS1TA 01-20-2007 10:20 AM

Thanks a lot for the offer, I can get a sticker with no problem though. Thanks, Ryan

digitalbird 01-20-2007 04:47 PM

I will be running no cats once spring rolls around! Just ordered the catback, headers, and ory are next!

Keep the cats on the car...DUH! What kind of power increase did yout hink you were going to gain by taking them off? Ask yourself if the benefits outweigh the consequenses.

I've seen 100hp.

you asked :)

delinquent543 01-23-2007 05:25 PM

how could you get a sitcker with out cats.. ive had a hard enough time getting a sticker and i HAVE cats... granted i had the SES light on for a good while. but still. and for what its worth, no cop will ever get on his knees and look under your car for cats. it just wont happen, at least here. i mean, unless ur exhaust smells like a barrel of gas, in which case just say u have an exhaust leak or somethign. im running a LM and i get on it all the time, not to mention being pulled over equally as much and not once has a cop ever even hinted that my exhaust is too loud. at teh same time, why bother? just run cats.. i could see if u take it to the track every other day, but its your daily driver right? just get some pacesetters and a catted y and call it a day. u wont get 100 hp by just removing the cats (on your car atleast). idk, take my advice with a grain of salt.

Slowhawk 01-23-2007 05:31 PM

You run Cats to be legal but have a SES light which probly put's the car in a limp mode and screws up the exhaust output.

I don't get it :chug:

Now,I'm not for or against Cats but in higher hp cars they do hurt performance. Then again alot of people run those abnoxious Loudmouth catbacks too.I'm a fan of a quiet exhaust :)

I RUN THEM :)

98hardtopSS 01-23-2007 07:12 PM

i run them and have had two cops get under my car to see, one hubbardston cop and one statie on route 2....or maybe i just have bad luck???

everywhere i go they tell me to turn around its too loud, i have longtubes texas y pipe and edelbrock catback, i have heard much louder and i get a hard time
i think if you get an asshole cop who knows what he is looking for you might catch a fine, another buddy of mine got a nice fine for not having them on an lt1 car in templeton ma as well, cops seem to be real strict out here with loud exhaust, then on the other hand i have had cops tell me it sounds great so go figure

No but I gained a mph and shaved over .15 at the track. Wouldn't doubt if a head/cam car saw well over 10rwhp consistently.

This spring I'll dyno it w/ the cat's out and we'll see, I'll have a new tranny and stall by then so it might effect the #'s a little.

F-Bobby 01-24-2007 09:05 AM

the problem with LS-1s is that even if a cop looks under the car you cant see them anyway. they are right off the manifolds. its near impossible to see them when the car is on the ground.

makes me wish i had a 4th gen lol. you can see i run no cats from 100 yards away....

2000LS1TA 01-24-2007 09:43 AM

With Longtubes they will see right away

ShevrolayZ28 01-24-2007 11:53 AM

My car has gutted cats. We'll see how it goes when I try to get a sticker in March. My car has a big ass muffler but it's still kind of loud. I go easy on the gas when I see cops and so far I haven't had any problems.

The gas station I go to has been pretty lax about inspecting my other vehicles, and they like American muscle cars so I'm hoping they don't bust balls.

I probably go to the same "Lazy" shop in Charlton that you do.

Last time I went, I pulled up with the Borla wide open and no cats. The cam in my car chops pretty good, and if you let it run for longer than 10-15 seconds in the garage your eyes will start to sting. They just laughed and scaned her... cleaned my tires off pretty good when I left their dirt parking lot.;)
