Default 502 bbc...warrenties???

ok so my dad bought a 502 from a dealership had it stroked to a 540 w/ H/C. we put it into our boat..... now the motor had at most 2.5 hrs on it, and it threw a bearing due to the cap on the back side of the motor leaking....its the cap on the back side of the motor where the cam is.....

is there anyway to be reimbursed for the repair of the motor since it was a factory flaw???

thanks

i would say contact your dealer... only they can tell you for sure.. .but i think that if its been modded like that they won't do anything.. i wouldn't let them know about the mods though

No warranty on anything once it is put into a boat. Even the crate engine manufacturers that offer warranties say "not for marine use". Boats are 100x tougher on engines than cars. Where else do you spin a BBC over 4500 rpms for hours on end or over 5000rpms for extended periods. Once you get a good one and get it properly tuned it will run a long time if properly cared for. The 454 Magnums in my boat have over 1600 hours on them most of that time spent between 3800 and 4200 rpms cruising in a 15000 lb boat. The 540 in my buddies fountain has 5 seasons on it and it seldom sees less than 5k rpms.

thanks for the reply, i didnt know that. we have ours in a 26' prototype checkmate the last motor was a 454 that was hurt and was a dog. we had the motor setup to have max tq at 3k and we'll cruise around the 4k mark...im still waiting on the specs of the motor

What kind of top speed are you looking for. Usually you want your peak torpue closer to 4k or higher on a boat. You should be able to spin that 540 to at least 5800 with a good valvetrain properly ssetup. Set it up and prop it to run top rpm at light weight then you will lose 3-400 rpms with passengers and coolers. On the fountain we switched to a 4 blade 26 pitch hydromotive and lost 2 mph up top but picked up 6 mph at 3800 cruise.
Checkmates are light boats that thing should fly. Good luck with it. I cant wait for boating season.

yeah same here the chesapeake is awsome!!

looking for a top speed of 80ish.... we just want the grunt and pull from a idle or a low cruising rpm. we normally just cruise around 40
