Default Emissions question:CT

Does anyone know if they check stuff out i.e. under the hood, under the car or do they just look to see if they SES light is on to see whether or not to check.

They'll scan the car, and look underneath it. They can look under the hood, but they won't know what the hell they're looking at because 99.9% of the emmissions testers aren't mechanics and wouldn't have a clue what they're even looking at.

Same in MA

You got cat's, yup.
You got codes, nope.
Here's a sticker.

Although I recommend finding a shop that doesn't have a reputation of being hardass's. Plus slipping the dude an extra $10-20 helps a bit.

put cats on or something that resembles cats, and make sure all the systems are set to 'ready' and there are NO SES codes

and if some reason something doesnt check out on the scan DO NOT LET THEM PUT YOUR CAR ON THE ROLLERS tell them to abort the test

I remember a thread about somebody running into a major pain in the *** due to exactly that. One key point: if you have any codes, don't clear them and then go get the sticker, if they scan it it will show "not ready" and you've got a problem.

As far as a visual inspection, it depends on the shop.

Most at least chk for a cat, most dont care about EGR or AIR.

As long as there is no SES codes, your fine, if you fail you get defaulted to the roller and you HAVE TO PASS.

actual sniffer test, they wil kick the car to it if there's too many not ready codes.

That, is death, because once you get put on it, you will have to go on it every time from there on out.

So, basicially turn the car into a race car and stop driving it on the street at that point, find a way to make emmissions legal power, which will never really happen, play the mod/demod game every 2 years, or park it until it's 20 years old then pull it out, and hope they still aren't testing cars that are 20+ years old anymore.

I had to take the test earlier this winter and failed b/c of all the codes I had and lack of cats. I was still able to renew the registration on my car, but I just need to be able to pass emissions next time i go in or I can't renew. Hopefully my car will be gone by then so im not worried.
