If you're swapping cars you could just say that your car costs a thousand and so does his. Make up written sale transactions and give a copy to the DMV when you pay your 70 bucks sales tax to them.

Honestly you have to make it reasonable, for my car when i payed 11,800 for it I only had $5000 on the sheet and the lady gave me a look but it worked, and i payed quite a bit less.

If you're just swapping cars there is no money trace etc. You can just claim you feel the value of the cars is 1k. If they ask you can simply state engine trouble etc devalued the car.

10 years ago I purchased a car for a few grand and KBB was 9k. I listed on the written sale sheet I made up that I only paid 500 bucks. They sent some letter to me, so I mailed them the sales receipt and stated the clutch was bad and it had engine trouble. (the clutch part was true).

I can live with myself for evading the system. Corporations and the rich do it on the grandest of scales.

Best to get a receipt from your seller stating you paid $200. As-is. Pay your $14. tax and show them the sales receipt. Case closed.

Sounds good, but you don't have to put down that much. Just say its a car that needs fixing up thats all. If you have a receipt from the seller for any amount then it can't be questioned.

My uncle recently gave me a truck and shipped it to me from florida. He sent a notorized letter with the truck stating that he was selling it to me for $1. The book on the truck was more than 5k. I just showed dmv the letter and that was that.

That's the best way, get a notarized letter stating the swap. I did a similar thing with a landscape trailer and had all sorts of problems, until I got a notarized letter signed by all involved parties. I made no mention as to the value of the the trailers only that it was an even swap and no money was changing hands. It should be enough.

I have sold a couple of cars in the past to family members and friends for $1. The DMV will eventually send a letter to the new purchaser stating the value of the car is worth $xxxx, then you need to prove you sold the car for a dollar. All the purchaser had to do was send a letter to the NJ DMV that I signed (seller) stating that I sold the car for $1 because of reason #x:
1. Family member
2. Poor condition of the vehicle.

Neither I nor the purchaser have ever heard from the DMV again. The letter usually comes a couple of months after the car is registered, so either get the letter from the seller now or make sure you still are on good terms with the seller.
