Has anyone had this problem with a bubbling hatch?

How did you fix it?

1. Identifying the Root Cause

Urethane/Adhesive Migration: Much like the infamous "sail panel" bubbling issue on 4th Gen F-bodies, the factory used urethane adhesive to bond the rear hatch glass and panel assemblies. Over time, heat and moisture can cause the chemicals in this adhesive or the substrate to migrate upward, bubbling the paint from underneath.
Rust: The rear hatch is constructed of a sheet molded compound (SMC) or fiberglass skin bonded to a steel frame. If moisture gets between these layers, the steel frame rusts, swelling the seam and pushing the paint outward. [1, 2, 3]

2. Why Sanding/Repainting Usually Fails
If you simply sand down the bubbles, use body filler, and repaint the area, the problem is almost guaranteed to return. Because the root cause (chemical migration or underlying rust) originates from behind or underneath the paint, painting the surface won't stop the chemical reaction. [1]
3. Recommended Repair Options

The Permanent Fix (Panel Separation & Sealing): To fix it correctly, a professional body shop must separate the affected bonded layers, completely scrape away the failing factory adhesive/sealant, treat the rusted metal (if applicable), and re-seal it with high-grade modern automotive adhesives and epoxy primers.
Hatch Replacement: Because the labor to separate, strip, and properly re-bond the hatch is extensive, many owners opt to simply source a rust-free, non-bubbling used hatch. You can find these at specialized F-body salvage yards or through community groups using the LS1TECH Forums classifieds.

Door molding be gone!

After thinking about it for years I got bored the other night. Ripped it all off! At 27 years old I was always afraid of what might be underneath it or happen while removing it. It always pissed me off that the molding wasn't even really that straight anyway. It left little to no adhesive on the body, I was really surprised. I spent more time cleaning off the dirt and hard water staining than anything else. After some light product and elbow grease she's good to go.

**If this needs moved to appearance/detailing, feel free.**

2002 WS6 Rebuild

Hi Everyone,

First time post and hoping to get some direction. I bought a 2002 WS6 off of Copart and currently working on it to get it back on the road. Currently it's in the shop for rust repair as I stripped the interior to the sheet metal. Currently they've take a foot out of the passenger side floor (photo below is the initial they've cut more since then), half a foot out of the driver side, fabricating new wheel wells, wire wheeling interior/exterior, killing the rust and then coating. When it gets back I'm installing OC Carpet replacement kit, new factory style audio and reupholstered seats.

My question is with the bolts that hold the seat belts in place that bolt to the floor. As I understand the thick rubberized coating bound up on each bolt is OEM intended to both keep the bolt from rusting and to keep the elements from the outside from getting inside. Can anyone advise what that coating is and what is the modern equivalent i should be using when I put everything back in? I posted some of the rust spots.

Paint peeling

I�m questioning if there was some odd paint defect from the factory on these 4th gen cars. I had my windshield removed because it has a leak. I suspected rust up top which it does have. But what is with the paint? Paint was peeling off with the windshield. But what was underneath is red paint. Highly doubt the windshield or t top area was repainted. No eveidence of overspray or anything being masked off. Wondering if this is what causes the windshield issue paint separating from the body.

Hey guys, new to the forum but Ive had a 2000 firebird for about 15 years now. Finally found someone in my area with a ws.6 hood but its pretty rough. I took it to my local body shop and we couldnt quite tell what we were dealing with, I was hoping someone with some experience dealing with our cars would know how many layers of paint there are. The whole thing needs sanding clear down, he recomended block sanding it, I more want to know if these hoods had a gel coat and how thick they are? The clear is basically burned off from sun damage and the base sands pretty easily, but then theres a VERY thick layer of a light grey material that I at first though was the gel coat, but if you look carefully in the pictures there seems to be another layer of base and clear below that? I hit part of it with a DA and it seems to sand pretty easy. Anyways let me know if this is pretty typical of factory paint or if im dealing with some kind of frankensteins monster lol thanks!
