legal or not to NOT have mufflers on car??? Ft. Myers, FL
We live in Lee, County, Florida.
my 21 yr old son recently bought a 2012 v8 California special mustang. It came w/ dual mufflers. He wanted the car to be louder so he had his friend remove both mufflers. We've tried explaining to him that it is illegal to drive w/o mufflers. He says that since he has the catalytic converter that he's okay. He's got his car loud now; heck you can hear him coming home from 1/4 mile away.
Can someone tell me strictly if this is legal or illegal to drive his car w/o mufflers??
Please and Thank you to anyone who can assist me.

Depends on the cop. I've been ticketed for not having mufflers on a car before.
The upside was I produced an "invoice for exhaust" prior to the ticket due date and all I had to pay was $25.
316.272 Exhaust systems, prevention of noise.—
(1) Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with an exhaust system in good working order and in constant operation, including muffler, manifold pipe, and tailpiping to prevent excessive or unusual noise. In no event shall an exhaust system allow noise at a level which exceeds a maximum decibel level to be established by regulation of the Department of Environmental Protection as provided in s. 403.061(11) in cooperation with the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. No person shall use a muffler cutout, bypass or similar device upon a vehicle on a highway.
(2) The engine and power mechanism of every motor vehicle shall be so equipped and adjusted as to prevent the escape of excessive fumes or smoke.
(3) A violation of this section is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a nonmoving violation as provided in chapter 318.

It is illegal, but not really enforced, that being said if he does get stopped for something else and the cops wants to give him problems, especially since this is a newer car he will not only get a ticket for no mufflers, but also the car being to loud, these two tickets can be over $500.

I've never seen a law saying a car must have mufflers. Anyone find one I'd like to read it. Now most cities have noise ordinances that can get you ticketed.
But illegal.....doubt it.
We have a car show in town where 1,000 cars show up to every Friday night. Half of them were T-Buckets and other old muscle cars.....headers is all they have. They also drive around with them daily.
Its all about Noise.............
----and nothing to do with mufflers, but I was pulled over TWICE in 1998 when I first picked up my WS6.....the cops just wanted to get a closer look.....LOL

It is illegal in FL to not have mufflers.
However the noise law specifically calls out certain BD.

because of this the only way to enforce this is with DB meters. This is why a lot of times these are not enforced, since a good lawyer can get people off of both. But if you are caught doing something else and the cops wants they can easily do a visual inspection and tack on the no mufflers, no catalytic converters. Again this law comes down to just do not do stupid stuff and you should not have a problem.
