Why does it matter if someone is on your bumper. They aren't touching you, they aren't restricting your line of site, they aren't doing anything but driving to close. The only thing that could happen is you stop faster than them and they hit you. They get a ticket, you get your car fixed. Your insurance does not go up AFAIK. As far as I'm concerned cop is trying to keep people from driving recklessly. You weren't doing anything to bad so he gives warning just to let you know what could happen if you were racing. Cops do that all the time to try and scare people into doing the right things.

Having been on both sides of things, I can see where the officer may belive the event to be a "street race" if both your car and the other vehicle appeared to be high performance cars in his opinion. Had he not felt both cars were involved in an actual race, he may have chosen to ticket you for reckless endangerment, exhibition of speed , or any number of possible moving violations. If someone is tailgating you, the best way to get them to back off is to slow down, not that it always works, but it is the recommended practice. Alot of times, this will anger the driver who is tailgating and cause them to show some form of road rage, which in some states is a big ticket, if the officer observing feels that RR has occured. IMO, if you simply pulled away at a slightly elevated throttle to avoid the car being to close to your rear, I don't think a ticket would be warranted, but if , to pull away from said vehicle, you decided to go WOT and blast ahead, then at least a warning , verbal or written, should have been issued. It's always up to the opinion of the officer to issue a warning or ticket, so , if you do get pulled for something of this effect, honesty and politeness is your best bet to get **less**of a violation. Cops get lied to on almost every stop and they appreciate honesty.

If you maintain a high enough rate of speed, you would have neither anyone on your bumper nor be cited for "racing," maybe only for straight speeding... Problem solved.

Hey jason, remember my ticket? for doign a burnout in traffic... he put on it. racing. went to court with a lawyer and the prosecutor within seconds of seeing i had a lwayer turned the ticket to nothing. like everyone else knows in jacksonville. the cops are on the risk of losing their jobs for how badly theyve been doing. so now they pull us, sometimes reckless drivers over for little stupid **** just to prove they deserve to keep their jobs. if it means enough to you like it did me, pay a lawyer to get it off, if you had gotten a ticket, and hell get it cleared away for a good fee to him, but you wont have the points off your license.

That law is on the way out, will be much more 'precise' next time around.
Thank myself and our local hero V-seriesTech for his ticket and his lawyers willingness to take it all the way to the 11th district court of appeals and having the law ruled unconstitutional.

Apparently a Trooper 'thought' we were racing and decided he would ticket him for racing on a highway but we were simply cruising kinda fast....lol.

The problem with any law with regards to vehicle citations are how the officer interprets it in his own opinion. The street racing statue has a phrase in it stating "an exhibition of speed", a lot of officers use that phrase to cite many people who accelerate very fast on the streets. I had a JSO officer pull me over when I stepped on the gas after waiting a long time for a semi to back in a section of a building to a business site. He told me that what I did was considered "street racing" because of the "exhibition of speed" I did, I argued with him telling him it was actually an "improper acceleration" not racing. My father is JSO as well and he told me what a lot of guys like to do to screw people into a "racing on the h-way" ticket and how they misinterpret/misconstrue the statue. Make a long story short I threw the knowledge my dad shared with me back at the officer, the officer agreed that he was BS'ing the racing ticket to scare me and told me he liked my car and have a nice day. The guy was cool its just a lot of people have no clue about the many florida state laws and specifically what they do and do not cover.

Christ, if this "stepping on the pedal" crap ******* equals "racing" then I guess I'm a professional racer who races every day...

I race to work and from work. I'm a dedicated racer!!!

I had the same thing happen to me. I did accelerate quickly. but he didn't say anything about excessive acceleration. he told me I made an improper start. I told him I did nothing of the sort I did not break the tires loose, or get sideways while turning left. when I turned left I got the car straight and then I mildly got on it maybe 50% throttle. there were not even in position to see me leave the light. they were across the street next to some buildings in Waterford Lakes so he couldn't see me leave the light. so I rebutted and told him he had no proof of an improper start because he didn't see me leave the light, from his location it would have been impossible. Then he said weren't you being excessive. I said define excessive, he then said slow it down and i said am I being held for anything. he said no so I left nice and easy. but no citation that is the good part.

like glenb1991 said the cops are just looking for reasons to pull someone over.
most of them just think that we are going to do something. i say it really doesnt matter if you take off that fast as long as you stay under the speed limit
