Intercooled LT1's

im looking mainly for 93-97 styled front end firebirds that are running FMIC's. building my turbo project and need some pics to see how you guys solved the airflow issue.

Here you go....it's a camaro though. I cut out the whole front...I think you can do the same on the bird too.

Everyone has their own opinion. Mine is :barf: . (No gaping mouth allowed on my Bird.)
I will be going with a vertical mount under the car with supporting fans if required. I already have a meth system installed to support the less than optimal location.

what you running for your set up koolaid? im going with a butt mount. and i was thinking about putting a puller fan (or a couple) on the intercooler to help out if i cant cut the front.

Grr Jan 6, 2009 10:34 PM

I dont have any pics of mine, but i basically cut the area where the license plate out and epoxied a screen in it. I get alot of complements on it as it looks very nice, no problems with IATs, IC is mounted vertically in the bumper support

i noticed you have a T/A Grr. if i had that style bumber i would probly do the same thing as you but since the firebird has the nice long pointed one not so sure how it would look. from what your sig has in it im sure your car is pretty fun on the streets lol

Here are some pics of My 96 WS6 Formula. I wanted to still keep the most of the nose intact. It works great. My intake temps are around 100 degrees at 18psi. I am still waiting on a final dyno #. I ran out of fuel at 5000 RPM. It did do 680 RWHP at 5000 rpm though. I will get some better pics after work today.

yeah i could. or i could just buy a already turbo intercooled car too lol. all your guy's cars are sick! Especially yours T/A Kid. Is your car done yet or still in the "put back together phase"

T/A KID Jan 7, 2009 02:44 PM

Thanks I appreciate it. We fired the car up for the first time about a week ago, sounded great and had great oil pressure. Buddy coming over tonight to help me on it. Should be road worthy in a few weeks. That pic is about 2 months old, done a lot since then.

daves94formula Jan 7, 2009 04:01 PM

i was actually thinking about picking up a engine from VRE. since you bought from them how are they to work with?

T/A KID Jan 7, 2009 04:45 PM

I would definatly talk to Eric, tell him Ben from Arkansas sent you.

I also have a butt mount. My idea is as follows:
Purchase an intercooler that has both in and out on the same side. Not as efficient as the other type, btw, but less piping and fewer turns.
Mount the intercooler just behind or just in front of the air dam (t.b.d.).
Run the charge pipe into the back (inlet) of the cooler.
Run the outlet into the fenderwell, up and out the hole left by my factory air cleaner system, to the MAF. I plan to make it appear as much like a CAI as possible, which I think I can pull off.
Augment the intercooler by 2 puller fans, as well as the methanol injection system (also hidden).
Result should look almost completely stock, which is the goal.

Maybe think about ATI twin intercoolers if you don't want to cut up your bumper.
