I think another question would be who tunes them. If tuned like doo doo i wouldnt be surprised these cars r blowin up.

Default Tune can only do so much

Certainly a car tune on the ragged edge trades that little extra power for reliability, but that's not what this thread is about. It assumes that we are driving street cars and they are tuned for safe street driving. For centri cars that means an AFR of 11.1-11.7 @ WOT and timing around 17 degrees. Turbos want 10.7-11.5 and less than 15 degrees timing. Those are only baselines because every engine is a little different.

This thread is about boosted stock blocks. They have pistons, rods, rod bolts, main bolts, rings, head bolts, etc that are designed by GM to safely handle about 350 rwhp. So pushing ANY stock engine that wasn't build for boost from the factory 50-75% over stock power levels is just asking for it.

The question is how long will it last at different the power levels? SDCE told me that they rarely push stock LSx motors over 500 rwhp. So if longevity is a concern then keep it under 500.

Thanks for keeping the replies coming. Updated to this point.

'Trust' - I like the way you organized it. Maybe I'll change over to that.

maxgee - What type of FI?

I had a Vortech v-9 G-trim head unit with aftercooler. I was running about 8-9 pounds of boost. Brand new Jasper engine, and it lasted for 3,000 miles. AFR was 11.5 at wot. Not sure of rwhp. First dyno pull cracked the front main seal. Then it was downhill from there. Had massive amounts of smoke coming out of breathers. Figured out it cracked the # 5 and 7 ringlands. Lesson learned don't go into forced induction if you don't have the bank roll to back it up. It is very pricey when things go wrong.

Seems like if you can keep it below 500rwhp you can be safe on the stock rotating assembly is the bottom line. With a safe tune off course.

I am very impressed to see such high numbers from stock engines. I know personally 2 local guys one had sts lt1 and one had ati lt1. Both took out there pistons pretty quickly, one guy lost race to heads/cam/headers bolt on ls1 buddy and tightened up his pully to think 8psi lost ringland almost right away.Sts car had problem with boost controller it went not sure how high up and again ringland let go. So can't possibly see how some of you guys are getting the stock hypercrap pistons to live this long. If it was me would run 5 to 7psi with most turbos and mabye a bit more with 317 heads lowering compression. Past that well I would make sure you have the money to back it up if the engine goes boom!

I went straight to forged engine feel a lot safer with that.
