A Cog setup's draw backs With all this belt slippage i am wondering why should i even buy an 8 rib setup. With the crank pulley that came with the kit and the 3.2" pulley I am seeing 7-8 psi on the street and 10 psi at the track. I now have the MMS crank pulley and a 4" blower pulley and i see the same i saw before on the street and still slipping up top. I now see boost faster and quicker of course, but nothing yet from the track till friday with the new pulleys. Why shouldnt i just jump over an 8 rib setup and go cog?? I know the belts are like $85 bucks but do they break as often as the belts do now??? No slip right?? What does it do that a 6 rib belt doesnt do that everyone says makes them not streetable? Can i use a cog setup on my daily driver?? Daily driver to me means it gets me there and back. Who cares about milage or RPM. Thanks Kyle |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs yeah! what he said! :secret: i'd like to know too. |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs I'm interested as well, this is what I might have to do if this all doesn't work out... |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs I know Golden West Performance is experimenting with a Cog setup now. They say they've found a belt that seems to hold up, but they want some longevity testing it so they don't steer people wrong. Also, they have come up with a way to address the bracket flexing. This MAY be enough with some folk and the ribbed belts. Since they are dealing with exactly this issue with ATI Procharger at higher boost levels, you might see if they are anywhere with it yet: 303-346-5232 Kenny Kiersten is the owner |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs Maybe they can figure out my problem too.. |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs WOW..... Most of the the people i see as BIG Dogs dont even know????? Is the ATI kit for the C5 a 6 rib?? or 8 Rib?? BOS you have an 8 rib correct?? A COG is a toothed wheel correct but what is there to stop the belt slipping off the pulley its self?? Someone has to know a little about a coged setup. |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs I have an 8 rib, all the ATI kits come stock with 6 ribs for now, but they are upgrading to 8 ribs, cogs is basically a teeth type pulley, figure it being opposite to the rib type setup.... |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs I thought that is what you had BOS. When is ATI's 8 Rib setup going to be out?? Will it be any better then anyone elses 8 rib that is out now? I know when i was running the Napa belt i was getting slippage up top and the belt looked like it was stretched and riped apart. This thing was in pieces under the hood. So far so good on the Gatorback. What belt do you use BOS?.... Dirty?...BLACK LS1 T/A?? |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs I've tried NAPA, Gates so far, haven't tried a gatorback, but was told that they are cheaper made than the others... My next step with my whole issue is to call procharger, because if they plan on making a 8 rib kit they better get ready for the issues... |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs I hear ya on the issues. You say the Gates Belts are made better then the Goodyears?? Then why are the goodyears like $5 bucks more for the same belt. My last Napa belt lasted 5 days and two of the days were just driving 10 miles each way to work on the freeway. The gatorback is holding so far but we will see of friday at the track.... bringing an extra one and my jack. I got a belt change down to 30min now..... |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs The Goodyear Gatorback has held up better than any other belt, for me. |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs Black LS1 T/A, Are you seeing any Belt slip now that you are running the MMS crank pulley w/ a Gatorback?? How tight do you have your belt? Back on Topic. Anyone else know anything abouta Cog setup??? PSJ? Did you look into it for your setup?? |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs Kyle, how tight are you getting the belts? i know that the last few times we've installed them they've been pretty darn tight, but shoot man, you've got half the tensioner travel left. |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs I believe I get belt slip. I believe, unless you have a cog, you will ALWAYS get some belt-slip at higher RPMs or on a vehicle that revs very quickly in RPMs. BUT, it is not as bad with the Gatorback and the Gatorbacks withstand the tightness longer before breaking or losing material. |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs it is not as bad with the Gatorback and the Gatorbacks withstand the tightness longer before breaking or losing material. Vents, So far it looks like you, me and danuel and charlie are going to SAR on friday. |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs Kyle... get a real job and stop browsing the boards at work! :p I agree with Black LS1 T/A, you will always get a little belt slip in the higher RPM's, it's just the laws of physics when you are trying to spin something that fast with a piece of rubber. Once you know that you're not suffering from the bracket flexing it's just a matter of the correct tension on the belt. Sooner or later it's going to strech/break from wear. Keep your extra's on hand and buy some stock in Goodyear. ;) Hopefully ATI's 8-Rib will help take care of some of this. |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs Its also a matter of getting the pulleys to line up too..... |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs I guess you guys are right. Sooner or later the load we put on our belts they will break. I just hope its not once a week like it was with the Napa belts. Thats gets up there with my gas bill$$$$ ha ha |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs Yea, I just dropped $30 on a carquest belt... :bang: |
Re: A Cog setup's draw backs I know people's finger grip will be different, but I try to twist the belt with my thumb and forefinger and if it will twist greater than 90 degrees, I tighten it some more. And I allow a couple days of driving to try to achieve optimal tightness: - Put it on and run a few minutes. Tighten. - Drive out and tighten when I get back to the house. Day two: - Drive out and tighten. Get on it. Not the expected boost level? Tighten. Day three: Repeat day 2. Belt life is significantly shortened if I try to get optimal tighteness (max boost without dropoff) in one day. A pain... but it works best for me. |
