poll do it your self or a shop

Im just looking for the % of people that enjoy working on their car at nights and weekends compared to letting a speed shop doing it in maybe half the time working on it threw normal bussiness hours

bravoboost 07-07-2009 10:26 AM

If you have the resources to do it correctly @ home, then by all means do just that.

I prefer to work on my own stuff, but I will have a shop putting my car together for me while I'm deployed, only because my best friend works there, I'm friends with the owner, and I know that they are the absolute best around.

Personally, I've always gotten more satisfaction doing the work myself, but if you don't have time and know a reputable shop that might be an option.

Definately do it yourself if you are able to. Nothing like the satisfaction of doing it your self and spending the money you save on more speed parts!!

Agreed with the DIY, not the mention the satisfaction you get when the car is back up and running!

i think of it this way you didn't learn how to walk till ya tried. you never learn a dam thing till ya try so buy the tools and build the crap your self! DIY all the way!!

BLOWNBLUEZ06 07-17-2009 09:06 AM

Many reasons I do it myself. I love tools, so I can justify purchasing them if I'm not having to pay for labor. I have ~40k in tools now. :D

Next reason: I have been screwed countless times over the last 25 years and started figuring if I wanted it screwed up, I could have done it myself, saved the money on labor, learned something, have some gratification only gotten by doing it myself, and got out from in front of the TV. For what labor costs these days, I could break a bunch of shit before reaching the break-over point.

i do it myself just becuase hey, if i learn to do it, i can charge someone later down the road to do the same thing on their car and know how to do it correctly.

D-Webz 07-17-2009 03:06 PM

I try to do as much as I can, its fun and I can say that I have done the work myself. I of course have friends with more experience than me that I refer to when I need help. I am even going to tackle my first engine build in about a year when I am done with school. If I blow it up, I blow it up. But if it holds together then I can say I built my own engine.

Of course if I blow it up I sure wont be able to afford a new setup for a long time...LOL

I like doing it myself if I can, cause I am picky about how things work and just want to have it done right.

ChevyChad 07-18-2009 12:56 PM

+1 for DIY

bondosgto 07-18-2009 05:36 PM

depends. on the suspension and tranny stuff i can do that. now a turbo kit? i could probably do it, but i will farm it out

Engine_HP 07-18-2009 05:40 PM

i have no space at home so i take it a shop and doo it my self but still have to pay the shop tho

elias_799 07-19-2009 12:34 PM

i try do do as much as i can myself, but most of us average guys will not be able to do everything. i had to get my car tuned, and that is not something i can do myself or something i would like to try to do on a very expensive motor.
