I checked the turbo and it looks to be untouched. No marks at all,no shaft play. I was running 15 degrees max timing. Im going to get some quotes today on resleaving the block and getting new pistons.

Do you guys think i would need to replace all 8 pistons or just the one? The rest look fine to me.

Pretty sure it's cheaper to just buy a good block unless you intend on making it better than stock.

Kurt Urban of KUP told me to keep the IAT's below 150F.

You could take the shortblock to a place like Opel Engineering and see what Bill says. As long as those pistons are appropriate for boost I'd just get one and fix what you have.

I've heard of folks programming their pcms so that when the IAT's hit certain numbers that the timing is dialed back, so that sounds like a good idea for you.

Where you takin the car apart out on the NW side or at the stealership?

This is why I always try to deter people from pushing the limits their combo on pump gas. Stay conservative on pump fuel, leaving a good margin for error. Yes you can run a # on pump gas but I never really thought the risk was worth the reward.

When you want to turn it up race fuel is cheap insurance for an expensive engine.

Well interesting thread. Always tuned my turbo cars with knock retard mostly ,forged and non forged and never lost an engine yet. Plugs are only going to tell you so much. You want to find the timing limits and knock retard is the usual way.

Were they desensitized in the tune or something? Why just the one piston..was it one of the infamous ones that die from maybe distribution issues .what intake? could it have been fuel problem with injector maybe on that cylinder?

Unlikely considering 3 plugs were melted.

170deg iat, 15.5psi boost and 93 octane is not a good combination.

Also the knock sensors can be a good guide but I do not put 100% faith in them. Even if they are working correctly damage can still be done with them in place.

I'm doin the work at the dealer ship. I've been given quotes for
About 1k to replace 1 sleeve.1piston all rings/bearings clean
And check the other pistons. Then I'm going to have the heads
Looked at. I wish my car would have pulled all timing after
150iats.ill never have a car tuned otherwise again.learned the
Hard way.

John,

Im dropping the motor and trans tomorrow night. Friday i have the day off so im going to come in at 8am and strip the motor down. If you want to stop in friday around noon you can see the carnage. The cylinder is slightly nicked. Im exploring the options of a new sleeve or boring it .005.

What's the cylinder wall look like? You may be able to just replace the one piston, some gaskets (do all the "while I have it out" stuff) and retune, since it was the tune and probably not the fault of the probe's.

Beware, I tuned a blower car this past weekend and the previous tuner zeroed out the knock vs temp tables, This is where you get into trouble..

Alex, I'll stop by Friday around noon, email me your cell # my phone just dumped all my numbers... john@motorsports-media.com

What bore is the block now? If you can go a bit more and just replace one piston that sounds nice, otherwise you'd be junking the one block and sourcing another.

I would just replace the one piston and rings. Get a retune and move on. Don't go any higher than 12-13 psi on pump. If you go higher use higher octane gas. I use probe pistons also they are great for the money.

I spoke the guys that built this motor. They said to replace the sleeve on cylinder 7 would be around 180,then they would bore it .005 to match the rest and clean the other cylinders, replace all rings, bearing and rebalance. Im also going to have the heads looked at and cleaned up.

I dropped the motor this evening and took a closer look. Cly 5 piston looks like it was going to collapse right in the middle of the piston its like pushed down.

Ill have it stripped down to a short block on friday and at the machine shop monday.
Im also sending the trans out for a freshen and installing of a t-brake. Meth kit is going on also after its all back in and then out for a retune.

I hope to be back at the track in September. Im going to run a 9 if it kills me.
