The infamous Turbo whistle... Looking at videos and reading day in and day out on the world of turbos. I notice you have about 50/50 split of turbo cars that really have a distinct whistle to them and ones that dont. What makes one make more noise than another? is it brand size or style? or mainly just exhaust setups? |
That's nothing more than the pitch of the impeller blades influencing the distinct sound you hear. Impeller diameter would have an effect on that as well. |
What you might be hearing is the sound of the wastegates and blow of valves. Some people run external wastegates and some internal. Externals make quite a bit more noise. My turbo car sounds like a heavy breathing hoover vacuum cleaner. You hear the turbos spool, then the external waste gates start playing their tune and then when I get out of the throttle, you hear the blow off valves actuating. |
someone posted a hilarious video of a guy who put a duck call on his blow off valve |
Im running an external wastegate....open. Its going to be more of a roar than a whistle lol |
Just got my new turbo put on and the new BWs480 is alot quieter than the old GTS76 was. But you can definatley hear the BOV more now!! |
does running the wastegate into the exhaust make it more whistle than just loud air sounds? |

I had a used turbonetics ball bearing T76 I ran on my lt1 that whistled REALLY loud, that thing screamed compared to the GTS76 and TC76 I had on the same car. Running open downpipe also makes it whistle louder IMO. |

with the gate dump going into the down pipe you can hear the turbo better. with the open wastegate dump it sounds like a really bad high pressure exhaust leak( which is what a wastegate dump is actually) when you come into boost. I have tried it both ways and prefer the dump pipe recirculated, from inside the car you can hear the motor better |
So can anyone really pinpoint the attribute that induces turbo whistle? I know on my cummins truck it was a Silencer ring that I removed & it made a major difference. |
Damm, there has been some OLD topics brought back from the dead this weekend. |
Haha yes I've noticed a ton of threads being brought back up too. only thing I can figure is people have already tried most of the ideas that are being mentioned on here. as to the turbo whistle, I wonders that myself. just in my way home earlier I noticed an f150 like 4 cars up and his turbo was signing something fierce. I see it on alot of diesel guys. maybe one of our turbo gurus will chime in with even more info.. |
I hear ya, I have a 2011 Ram 4x4 2500 with the cummins diesel and it whines. I like it personally. :) |
With the Garrett GT3782 (I think) that comes on 03-07 F series super duty trucks, the loud whistle comes from less blades on the exhaust wheel. 2003-early 2004 trucks has a 10 blade turbine wheel. Garrett put 13 blade wheels on the 2004-2007 6.0 and it got rid of the turbo whistle with straight exhaust |
