Maggie intake S'ploded - BOOM
 

Blipping the throttle this weekend in the garage, about 3500rpm when BOOM !! Then the idle went up due to an apparent vacuum leak. Shut off the motor and noticed the belt was thrown off, then seems the blower is slightly off. Then I noticed this.

It's a used Magnacharger 112 off my 04 GTO.

The intake had a crack that had been propagating for quite a while evidently. There is some clear areas where it had been burnishing itself along the crack seam and there were also areas where the casting was dirty vs. the clean edges of the break.

Ever price one of these intakes? I hope they have some pity on me. I've driven the

ahhhh fawk! Did it back fire? I have never ever seen that happen b4..

You need to make sure the bypass was working correctly.

Edit:Nevermind maggies have throttle body pre-bypass not like mine

No backfire, no nothing. Just plain boom.

That looks like an expensive fix... That sucks man! Hope they take care of it.

They helped me out some, saved me about $100 but it was still too expensive. I'm pretty positive it was a fatigue crack but just to be safe, I'm installing some burst protection that they should have anyway. All GMC kits have one, why not these?

Did you have to buy the whole intake, or just the upper?

I only really needed the upper but I have some big plans for that lower intake. I've been wanting one for a while so I could fabricate my own blower setup but never had the opportunity till now. So the next item is to get me a TIG welder, some aluminum plate and make my own twin Eaton blower setup.

My plans are to have (2) 90cid blowers from Supercoupe T-birds. That's 180cid or the rough equivalent of a 3 liter roots blower setup. I'll definetly need a forged motor. If it works, it would be over 1000hp.

that sucks! Any plans to take the motor apart to make sure that no metal got down in there?

The old "turn it over and listen" method will be employed but there were definetly some missing pieces of intake. I'm hoping they blew clear of the area and considering the mess in my garage right now, I'd never find them.

Besides, the motor cost less than the intake alone. If I had to pay for a gasket set, I'd double the cost of the motor.

You could pull the plugs and blow some compressed air in there. You should be able to hear anything rattling around in the cylinder.

Running 2 m90s would be MUCH better done via gen5 blowers from a 04-07 grand prix GTP.. instead of shitty gen1 blowers. You would gain 15-20% efficiency past 10psi, at least.

Keep the CR high, m90 blowers HATE high pressure ratios. I also highly doubt you would get anywhere near 1000hp with even gen5's... on paper given ideal conditions, you are only flowing as much air as a GT35r turbo at full bore.

That is odd, wonder how long it has been cracked for. Cant tell from the pictures but how thick is the intake material?

The intake isn't more than 1/4" anywhere it was cracked.

About the M90's...

I need to employ 2 different snout lengths with no cast in TB mounts. THe only one I saw was the TBird one. Have one I could look at?

I don't have plans on pushing these things to where a 3 liter blower could go. I can see some large Marge numbers but I've learned that there IS such a thing as too much power. I want a car I can pound on and not worry about blowing the crank out of it. Soooo, the blowers probably won't be pushing too hard, probably not even intercooled.

Shock and awe is as important to me as much as all out pawr.
