Default Rear mount turbo cars becareful..

tom heatley lost his 275 d/r camaro last night that had a rear mount setup..if you go on to read threw the thread you can see where he says he lost the converter/trans and the trans fluid lite the car up once it hit his rear mount exh..his ride was a beautiful car..figured i would pass this along so if you have one currently you can try and figure out a way so this dont happen to you....wraping wouldnt work either because you would just turn the wrapped exh into a tourch once it was soaked threw with fluid like motor oil or trans fluid..

This could happen with any car not just a rear mount car. Lots of hot parts underneath any car...

Most likely he lost a trans cooler line....so how bout we focus on the routing of them and the connections. Most people use aluminum an fittings thinking they are good. Well all aluminum an's will break. Its really one of the dumbest ideas if your thinking its a reliable piece. Put a 90 degree bent aluminum tube with a hose on it, that the aluminum tube has to hold some portion of, it will break, the only question is when. If you want reliabilty, use steel fittings.

Of course its possible that he exploded the trans, and windowed the case, but thats much much more rare then a line failure.

This is a CSC car...

The rear mounts don't really get all that hot. My turbo/piping never got anywhere near "red hot" on the dyno.

I had the same Problem once testing.. way to many things going on and broke a trans mount that was letting the motor/trans flex... it burt a hole in the stock metal lines going about 85 down the highway on a pull.... TONS and TONS of smoke... I got pulled over just to see flames... The exhaust wrap was like a wick soaked in atf... All sorta people pulling over with cell phones calling fire dept and cops and telling me get back and let it burn !!!!! I took the Keys from the Truck and Cut the heater hose and let it spray on everything and all over the place .... The fire went out ....... I now use all AN lines.... The warning comes more for "wrapped exhaust" then just rear mounts !

I keep a fire extinguisher in my car all the time. $30 for an investment that could save a life or at the very least your ride.

I do to in my drag car but the radiator line is a great way to soak the area then fight flare ups with extinguisher or if dd. I will put a knife in my cars now...

Yeah very quick thinking by Casey there! well done mate.

Having said that a few $ for a extinguisher would be the best. the dry powder ones are incredably effective! but they will only put the fire out! at least using the engines coolent you will cool the hot parts down and provent re-ignition.....

Seen this happen to WRC cars a good few times! wonder if the wrap is a good or bad thing? i glowing red enhaust manifold is much more likely to ingnite oil than a wrapped header i would have thought......

Chris.

and your oil pan could blow uot and dump oil all downb y your wheels causing you to spin out and crash and burn as well. good heads up, but **** like this can happen with just about anything. hell the gas tank could get soaked and explode.

I always hate hearing a horror story like that, and as bad *** as they are, unfortunately turbo cars are the most likely to catch fire since so many pipes get hot. I originally planned on and will now def have a fire extinguisher mounted on my cage when the car is done!
