Default Turbo Oil Feed Line Pressure Question / Sanity Check

I drilled and taped the fitting over my oil filter to run a -4 oil feed to my turbo. The engine has been run previously, but it's been more than a year and I was told I should prime the engine before firing it up. I removed the fuel pump fuse, removed the spark plugs, disconnected injectors, disconnected coils and hooked an oil pressure gauge to the turbo feed line. I have tried turning the motor over for about 10 seconds, but after 3 tries, I'm still not getting any signs of oil in the feed line.

Is the starter not turning over fast enough to prime the oil pump or do I have another issue? Any suggestions?

Scott

The pumps need more than the 150-200 rpms that the starter spins the engine to prime properly. Fire the car up and kill it and you will have oil everywhere.

Well louis what is the recommended way to prime these engines with or without turbos? I can't find the distributor hole to stick the oil pump priming shaft and drill.

I built a large accusump type charged tank that held 3 quarts with a cut off valve and pressurized to 90 psi. It filled the front port above the filter because I never had luck priming them by the starter method.

Having said that, pulling the plugs will allow 300-350 rpms cranking and you might see pressure. I have no patience, so I skinned that cat another way

On rare occasion we can get them primed with the starter only. Usually you just have to fire it up. Also, you can hook up the oil feed line to the turbo before you have prime. It'll get oil everywhere quick unless you have a problem somewhere.

would it help to unhook the feed line and pour oil down it? thats what i was gonna do with mine, hold the turbo end up high and dribble oil into it till it was filled then screw it in.

I prim the motor befor it goes in the car. I just add 6 quarts and make sure its level and bump the starter with a battery and some custom made jumper cables. It takes me about 30 secaonds to see oil come out of the hole where the oil sending unit goes. Oh and 5 seconds on the starter each time.
