LS9 cam in a turbo 5.3?

Default LS9 cam in a turbo 5.3?

How well would this cam work? Keep in mind this is not going to be a track car or a dyno queen. Im most likely going to have a 70 or 76mm front mount, 241s w/ slight portwork, truck manifold setup. Im looking for fast spool up and something I dont need to rev super high. The one concern I have is the -24.5* of overlap, but LPE is now recommending this over their GT7 cam for turbo/SC apps. Thoughts?

You would be better off with a custom cam around 212@.050'' on a 112 to 114 lsa or even a Zo6. JMO

Kind of hard to answer with no specs. A lot of people are not walking encyclopedias.

That cam is made for a square port head...That alone is enough reason not to run it. The cathedral port 241's will want a completely different cam profile..not to mention the displacement difference.

Would the LS6 be better? I thought the LSA would make for better spool up

Ls9 is not a good turbo cam on pretty much any combo.

Yeah, it didn't work worth a crap on the LS9.......

LS6, LS7, LS9 would all be better than a stock 5.3L cam. None of them would be near as good as one custom speced for your exact rig. The cam is a fairly important part of the overall equation. Why not have Pat G or someone you trust spec one that's optimum? The 220/220 .581 114 or 115lsa that shows up in the for sale section quite often would be one that would work well and be cheap if you're on a tight budget.

too much ex duration and not enough intake duration and too much -overlap
depending on your turbo, and with cathedral style heads, your typical turbo cam would have either equal or a little more intake duration as exhaust with a lsa of about 116-118 but if you have a large turbo for you setup it does not hurt to have a little more exhaust duration then intake and lower lsa
the ls9 was designed for supercharged app with square port heads that flow much better, definitely not the best choice

Ill keep an eye out for a turbo cam in the classifieds but this is a budget build. I dont mind swapping out a cam if i need to down the line, I know the LS6 works well, if something better comes up within budget ill get it

I am doing a similar build. I was thinking the LS3 cam (yes I know I'd have to swap front cover and such on it) Is that a possibility for a Turbo 5.3?

That might be the best cam of the factory bunch, but better degre it in being they are a VVT cam.

you would have to use LS2 timing cover/cam sensor with LS9 cam, I would rather have stock 5.3 cam re-ground.

Whilst I have never tried it, I'd find that hard to believe.

Almost any mild cam will always work very very well on a turbo build. That's why virtually ever OEM turbo cam is like that.
People have made very good power on even a totally stock camshaft.
