Would give an utterly ridiculous 1st gear !

Very poor choice, although might be mitigated slightly if it was the 2.97 first.

Nah, it's fine. I could see if it was a powerglide, then 1st would be stupid tall. But even with the th400s 2.48 1st, it works out ok, remember, 26 inch tires here.

You do realise the topic was a 6 speed manual ? No slippy converters here.

Agreed, was just using the 1st gear as an example. When the car was still t56, with the 2:73 and short tire, the final ratio allowed the car to pull decently in 1st. Probably wasn't optimal, but at the same time, wasn't exactly terrible.

26" tire, 3.31 gears in a solid 8.8" out back in my RX-7. Makes 800-1200rwhp depending boost by gear setting. With less power... a 3.55 is probably a better choice.

after almost 20 years and same z28 and several junkyard 10 bolts with almost every gear ratio they had available 3.20 to 4.10 i dont think i really noticed much differance other then how i launch and like to shift like maybe by a few hundred rpm. im about to install a tranny outta gto with the 2.97 first idk if ill love it or hate it but probably adjust to it regardless

Fixed it slightly.... I made the swap from 3.55 to 3.73 and love it. 700rw, 3000lbs raceweight. Car dropped about .12 seconds off the 60' with just the gear change and also does much better on the street when dig racing. I very rarely roll race but I can still drag 4th out to 160 or so.
What size tire and rpm to get to 160mph with 3.73's?

Either you have a engine that revs like a motorcycle, or some monster truck like tires.

28" tire just needs 7200 rpm to hit 160....
