Cam Selection Help

This is for a 2010 Camaro with a 416ci(9.28 cr) with LSA heads w/Patriot Extreme dual springs. Will be using two Garret/FP HTA GT3586R's.

It currently runs a Mast Stage II VVT cam(224/238 .578/.593 115 LSA) but plans are to swap to a non-VVT(LS3) style cam for the turbo.

I had ordered a custom turbo cam but the shop that is installing it doesn't think it is the best thing for the turbo application. They say it would need a shot of nitrous to get the turbos to spool quickly.

Here are the specs along with some suggestions from the tuner.

243/247 .623/.623 115 LSA 113 ICL

232/248 .614/.624 116 – 118 LSA

230/234 .644/.648 116+1 which has zero overlap

Which of these would be the best or suggest a better alternative.

The 243 is stupid big for turbo's.

Depends if the LSA heads have the stock intake runner or have been ported out.

I'd be pointing at a 230/230 or around there. Easy 1k hp cam for those heads.

The heads are a Stage II from Richard at WCCH(West Coast Cylinder Heads). The car made 463rwhp with WCCH L92 heads and Mast cam but in order to lower the cr a set of LSA heads will replace the L92's. Plus I have read that the LSA heads are better for FI any ways since they are made of a better material and are rotocast. The current heads have a 62.5cc chamber while the new heads have a 75cc chamber. That plus a change of gaskets(LS9 now) should allow the cr to drop from 10.38 to 9.28.

Do you think the last one on the bottom is the best then?

Would the higher lift cams require the replacement of lifters or springs more often?

What are the details on that turbo?

My first post has the info on the two turbos. Garret/FP HTA GT3586R's

The Garrett GT35 means it is in the 35 series family which is a medium frame turbo with a 68mm(62.25 ex/67.75 in) turbine wheel. The 86 means it has a 86mm(62 in/86 ex) compressor wheel with mass flow in the +75 lb/min range. They have ball bearings and billet compressor wheels and come with a Tial Stainless Steel turbine housing in a 1.06 A/R. The have 4" compressor inlets and 3" turbine outlets.

A buddy of mine is thinking of running the following cam in his SC car.

231/247 .617/.624 113 LSA

How well would that work with my combination?

All of those cams will work. Work well? Hmmmm. Re visit post number 2. Pretty good advice there.

What about 224/228 114LSA ? I am thinking of trying this out with some PR 215's

As said, any cam will work. You seem to be set on a conventional split. I ussually go reverse split or the same durations. Turbo's do not need huge cams to make power.

I am not set on anything that is why I wanted some suggestions. The first cam is what was shipped to me together with the turbo kit. But, my engine builder did not like it he said it had too much overlap and was too much. A tuner I know agreed with them "That turbo cam is pretty stupid. I agree with your builder." My tuner also said it was too big.

All the cam specs I posted were suggested to me for the build. I posted on here to see if anyone especially a vendor would come forward and either post a suggestion or pm me one. I had already talked to the the shop that sent the cam and I was going to return it while I still could.

The engine builder had informed me that he would not be able to degree the cam because I did not have the correct(I had the stock L99) cam sprocket. Thy said they could install it straight(dot to dot) up. I got on the phone and ordered a Cloyes Timing Set so he could install it as per Comps instructions. In the meantime I figured I could have a cam spec'd out while I was waiting for the timing set to come in.

Unfortunately, it took too long and they needed to get the car off the lift and out of the shop as it has been there since Oct the 3rd. So I talked to them today and the car is finished except for the cam sensor wire harness which they say is the wrong one. They said the car harness has 3 pins but the harness that came with the cam kit has 5 pins.:bang:

If the car doesn't run right I might go back later and swap the cam out again.

Any ways, thanks for the suggestions and your time. I will take it into account for future reference.
