Default 1977 Trans Am Rear Mount Turbo 5.3 build (Rob Raymers old TA) 9.66@142 new best

So, I've had a couple cars worked over by Unleashed Performance in Indiana and decided to let them try one more for fun. Since Rob had such nice results on his Rear mount Turbo C5 vette (see thread here: https://ls1tech.com/forums/forced-in...mount-e85.html) I decided to let him take a swing at his old Trans Am that I bought from him last year. Many people remember this 1977 Trans Am when it had the twin turbo setup on it, here's an old video of it:

When I bought the car from Rob it had a pretty nice 5.3 build going on so i've just kept that motor and decided to add the same rear mount Comp oiless turbo to it for fun. The car is currently at Unleashed getting the work done, so hoping to have some numbers on it as quick as possible. We've had a couple issues getting the Turbo from Comp (been ordered for nearly a month now!!) but hopefully they got it shipped today!! I'm pretty excited about this thing coming together with the guys at Unleashed, so as it progresses, i'll post more pics. Here's a few teasers plus one of the old twin turbo setup that Rob had in the car.

Thanks,

Billy

One of the cars Unleashed did up for me was my C6 Vette... They worked this thing over with some really nice results. The best dyno pull was 648hp pull with 12lbs of boost out of the TVS2300 supercharger. Here's a video of the "street" tune with 10lbs of boost 606hp

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8W4TjXgiWc

Here's a run down at opening weekend in Bowling Green a few weeks back. Had some traction issues (running nitto drag radials)... but it netted me a 10.77@134.6 on this run. Its got some more left in it if I can get it to hook. I'm really happy with the setup and tune. Not bad for a stock block bottom end and an auto.

My brother in law has a T/A just like that. Minus the LS engine of course.

Where's Unleashed at?

They are located in Georgetown Indiana, just 10 minutes north of Louisville Ky. The Website is : http://www.unleashed-performance.com/

Good group of guys. When rob was there..don't know the new guys)

I've always liked those TA's! I've got a similiar car 1980 Z28 camaro that i'm building up for Autocross. Its going to have an LS1 with a 6sp manual for some fun. I really like the LS motors in some of these older cars!! Great performance plus some mileage Nice "cool" factor to it as well when you raise that hood. Hoping for a decent outcome with it as well.

Thanks,

Billy

So the car has been up at Unleashed just over a month now. They ordered the turbo from Comp 2 days after i dropped the car of (2/22...Comp billed them for the turbo on the 2/29). Comp kept saying it would ship the next day or it had shipped THAT day. Still nothing showed up! Finally after alot of complaining and arguing with them they shipped the thing yesterday! Hard to believe its taken this long to get them to ship the thing! Frustrating. Thanks Unleashed for keeping after them! The turbo is kind of the center piece of the build, so its hard to get other things done while waiting on the Turbo!

What were the specs on the turbos before? How much boost to make that power?
What are the new turbos?

Take pics of the whole setup once its all finished.
Unleashed does some nice work for sure.

Hey Spoolin...

Its a brand new turbo, so i didnt have one on it before. Rob had a set of twins on it when he owned the car a few yrs back. I've taken it back to him to help do the rear mount build after he had such great luck with his on his C5. Plus I really liked the way these oiless turbo's spool so fast, and make great power in the lower RPM ranges.
The one Unleashed ordered for me was the T78 equivalent. I believe thats Comps- CT5-7884 oiless turbo. Its good to about 1275hp. (http://www.compturbo.com/products/ct5billet/ct5_7884) I'll be up at the shop tomorrow picking up my buddies car so i will hopefully get some more pics and get them posted.
If you have any questions on it call the guys at Unleashed, they have a ton of knowledge on these things. This will be my first rear mount setup so its a new area for me as well.

Thanks man,

Billy

Subscribed...interested in seeing how it's gonna perform! I have a Comp billet ct5 8079 oil-less that i'm really considering mid mounting in the bed of my el camino! I've ordered those hooker cast manifolds too! I'm also considering going air to water intercooler with small 12" dual radiators and 8gal water tank...all in the bed and street driven!

Im pretty sure the CT5 series turbos do not come in oiless. Its the Ct4 and Ct43 series that come in the oiless.
Check it out tomorrow and let us know.

What turbos were on the car when it was dynoed in the vid, thats what I meant.

Mine is definitely ct5 and not ct4 or ct43. Completely different compressor housing.

Here's the ct43 8079...rated at 1125hp

http://www.theboostlab.com/store/pro...c-T4-Open.html

And here's my Ct5-z 8079...rated at 1275-1300hp per Justin from Comp Turbo and it's oil-less.
http://www.theboostlab.com/store/pro...c-T4-Open.html

They have two types of Ct5's...the Ct5x and the ct5z. The Ct5z is basically a custom, hybrid turbo using the ct43's internals with a Ct5 compressor housing (ct5-z) Biggest it can go is 8079. Then you have the ct5-x which goes all the way to 91mm and costs way more!

Sorry for the thread hijack OP

Op, if it's the equivalent to the t78, you probably have the ct5z 7879.. Not the ct5x 7884. Thats a difference in $1000 bucks too...lol!

Do you know what size tubing theiy're gonna use for the hot side? I've read that guys recommend 2.25" all the way, 2.50" all the way or 2.5" stepped to 2.25" by the time it reaches the turbo. What size intercooler tubing are they gonna use? Goals for your set-up?

Thanks,
Dee

Turns out that it's a C43-78 billet... It's the largest oiless they make I believe. Ive got some pictures from my visit to the shop to day. It was freakin nice to finally see the turbo after rob worked so hard getting it here!
I'll post some pics as soon as I get back home.
It's 2.5 pipe coming out of each side merging into 3" pipe running back to the turbo then a 3 coming all the way back to the intercooler. Looks great so far!!

Thats what I meant the full Ct5 midframe is like $1K extra. You can get a Ct43 with the CT5 cover. I dont think its really worth it personally since the Ct43 as Unleashed proved makes wicked power.

Yeah.... thats a huge difference that i don't believe is worth it. I got some pics of the car today and some of the turbo that look pretty cool. The box of piping to do this thing is insane! The FMIC is in and looking good. They will be coming out of it with 4" to the throttle body. The Hooker cast manifolds look great and provide a ton more room then the headers did!
They are making good progress on the car and now that the turbo is here, i think they'll be flying with it!
So..here's a pic of the turbo, the box of piping (spagetti factory!) and a few of the intercooler and car so far.
Unleashed Rocks! This is gonna be a blast to drive. Who knows i may even take it to my 25th High School Reunion this year with some old AC/DC cranked up! haha!

Thanks guys,

Billy

It's worth it if your goals are 1000rwhp...lol! I told Comp what my motor size was, what max rpm i was gonna run, max boost and what my rwhp goals were and i ended up with that turbo. I can't wait to see what my car does...UPS dropped of my Miller Mig welder and wastegate today. Gotta order tubing now... Still can't do anything until i get my hooker manifolds...freakin' back ordered until the 29th.

I'll keep you guys posted when i start fabbing my set-up. 99.9% sure it's gonna be rear mounted in the bed of my El Camino with the A2W intercooler and water tank. Gonna run the frozenboost 1200hp A2W setup with their radiator and e85 to stay cool on the street.

Talon77, looking good bro! Can't wait to see some videos when it's done! I'm also curious to see how the Edelbrock Box style elbow performs on the carb intake. First time i've seen some one use that instead of a elbow or 4 barrel tb.

Dee
