Default TC78 on a 4.8/5.3- Horsepower/Backpressure

So I just bought a TC78 from Huron about 2 weeks ago and then I saw the thread about the bigger wheels available soon.

Sooooooo, with that being said I'm building a budget JY turbo set up for my fox body- The goal will be 140mph trap speeds and maybe a high 9 slip but its mainly a fun street car/Sat night car that gets beat on.

I know the 76/75 from Turbonetics or PT will make a ton more power with the bigger wheel but with the smaller displacement of the 4.8/5.3 will I do ok with the 68mm turbine wheel.

the car will never see any other engines other (large CI) than the JY specials.

My personal goal is to make 665whp - that's what my nitrous 408 Windsor made that I pulled out and sold to do the LSx swap.

basic setup will be

4.8
TH400 with tight converter
TC78- boost undetermined
E85
0411 PCM with HP Tuners

The fox weighed 2800 with my 408/5 speed combo

Skinnies is running a pt7675 I believe. I think you can reach your goal with the TC78, but you can reach it easier with something like a 7675 or T4 S475

backpressure shouldn't be a issue with the smaller displacement motors. my buddy is running 14psi on his 76mm ON3 turbo stock LQ4 and just ran down a 681rwhp cobra lastnight. He had to turn his boost controller up a decent amount because he is having BP issues with the small turbo and bigger cubes. Car only makes 10.5psi on a 13psi spring.

You'll do just fine with that setup. I had a 76mm with a 96ar exhaust housing on a 4.8 and it ran great and made plenty of power. It spooled a little slower than on my 383 it was on but still did fine. Just boost the hell outta of it !!!! To make up for the lack of cubic inches.

I went 136mph on a TC76 with the 68mm wheel on a 370 at over 4000lbs. In a Fox and on a 4.8 you can definitely go 140.

TC76 or 78 should work awesome with a 4.8 or 5.3l, terrific turbos!

Why not go with something like the precision gts? Spool is going to be almost the same and the engine happier

I have had both

I already have the TC78 and its also about $700 cheaper than the pte.

I was going considering selling the TC78 and going with the new turbonetics with the 75mm turbine.

Just saw this- it only made 570ish blowing thru the converter- I had it tightened up and haven't re dynoed-

ricer calculators says 620-640whp to go 143mph

just got a 3 bar map sensor- debating on getting a retune with HP Tuners at 21 psi or Switching to MegaSquirt and a Borg S478 Turbo and make more power with less boost.

Quick Reply: TC78 on a 4.8/5.3- Horsepower/Backpressure
