Front Mount Ls1 Third Gen w/ Truck Mani Kit

I've been gathering parts for quite a while now, and finally got another car so the camaro can go back under the knife.
Anyways the plan at the beginning was,
-great drivability
-awesome power without too much lag
-close to stock appearance
-as always, a semi-budget build (at least it started that way)

A couple months ago I knew I wanted more power but wasn't sure on the route to take. I knew after cam and heads I'd end up wanting more so I figured boost would be the best route. Did some research for a while and ended up with
-ls1 with forged pistons and rods w/317s and ls6 intake
-t56 and 9in
-tc7875
-Huron speed truck manifold kit

Parts so far:

That's going to be the basic idea. At the time I wasn't sure how well the truck manifolds would fit, but of course I had already put my deposit down since it was a GP. I did end up getting a GREAT deal on it regardless. ( HUGE thanks to Huron Speed)
I read one guy who mentioned that it hit the frame on the pass. side while the driver side hit the steering gear box but couldn't provide any pictures. So after talking to Jon and debating I decided to be the test dummy.
Anyways... Enough talking. I just started last weekend and will try to take as many pics as I can

So far the only thing which fit without too much trouble was the piping to the intercooler.
However, I do need 60 degree coupler instead of the 45 provided which was the only problem. The intercooler brackets really nothing to bolt to so the top bracket we cut the edges off so they sit flush and will be welded. The bottom bracket actually fits pretty snug from underneath.

Making sure the bumper cleared everything.
http://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/...098B6088C1.jpg
That was pretty much the progress from the weekend
Most of yesterday I spent removing a/c, egr, air and cruise control. Not too much got done.
After work today however I got the alternator off and figured why not see if these manifolds fit or not.
I only got the passenger side done but found out it does rub the kmember a bit, which shouldn't be a biggie since I got a pa racing kmember waiting to go in.
As you can see it was a huge pita to get in with the dipstick on. Finally removed it and it fell into place.

Thanks man!
93 /meth. E85 isn't really available around here unless you travel 45+ minutes.

Looks good Bro!!

Love that the parts are on the floor of what looks like a bedroom. Nice upgrade to a 3rd gen.

Thanks guys.
Haha yea it was pretty cool just looking at it all when I went into my room.
I never got a picture of them but I also had my clutch/flywheel in there with my aarms and a show-n-go.

And got a surprise from ups yesterday!

I ended up not getting much done last night. I want to swap out the kmember to see where the engine will sit. I only ended up getting the aarms unbolted.

From my experiments with multiple manifolds, you're going to be very disappointed. The driver's side will not fit. You could cut the flange off the manifold and hack up the crossover and make it barely fit.

I have the PA Racing K-member also. I had plenty of clearance with truck manifolds on the passenger side.

You mean with fitment of the unmodified crossover? I realize that I'll have to cut up the drivers side manifold and crossover someway to make them fit and work fine.
Do you have any pictures by any chance?

Got what I wanted accomplished tonight! Kmember is bolted in.. By one bolt for now
What a difference though, MUCH more room was left than I thought.
I am having trouble with one motor mount bolt, but I imagine it just needs to be aligned a little.

Also got my fuel pressure gauge and shaved down one hole to fit the eboost
Kinda hard to see but oh well.

No, I didn't take any pics of the manifolds that didn't fit. I tried 4 or 5 different sets of manifolds along with a pair of Thorley 2010 Camaro headers. Nothing fit forward and down. I did mock up a friends 4th gen truck manifold crossover (not Huron's) and there was no way to clear the steering without completely redesigning everything, so I scrapped the truck manifold idea.

Watching this... Im collecting parts for my swap now...

TinSoldier 05-04-2013 08:07 PM

If you go to a rack you can run the truck manis. Pa racing makes that k member with the rack option. You think you have room now get rid of all the stock steering stuff and you will think you could fit 3-4 midgets with mullets in there.

The manual pinto racks ive assumed was always more for drag racing. This will be a 95% street car. And the fourth gen swap with power steering quite a few people have problems with. Im unfortunately not good with steering geometry either so I think stock will work best for me.

Anyways....
Little update...
Fans are mounted on the radiator. I test fitted it and the top fan will need to move down one or two rows, however I could squeeze it in and it fit perfect. Ill get pics soon.
http://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/...6E28749651.jpg

Also realized BOTH manifolds will need to be cut. The passenger side I actually got bolted on but I had to take a stud out to get it on. I figure ill be able to cut a triangle out if that makes any sense and use a hammer to bang it into place. I imagine it should fit fine but then ill have redo the crossover.

Driver side wouldnt even bolt up. It hits the steering link plastic cover.

I know you're trying to blaze new ground here, but take some advice from others that have been where you are, including myself. Sell the 4th gen kit. You'll spend MORE time and MORE money making that 4th gen kit work as you would a custom fit setup. And the one you build won't look awful like a hacked up kit for another car.

I've already got 70% of the cold side done and 90% if I remove the sway bar.
I really doubt cutting the manifolds, stick welding them, cleaning the weld and then coating it will look "bad" if you ask me. Plus I won't have to worry about cracking.
That little bit sounds much better than buying tubing, fabricating and bending the pipes how they need be.
I'm able to modify the manifolds at my house to. Can't hurt to try right?
The worst I see coming from it is ill ditch the idea and get a custom hotside.

Have you attempted to mock up the crossover and turbo? Will it even fit without cutting the core support and relocating the radiator? Once you figure in the cost of the kit, cutting and welding of v-bands (no reason to use flanges if you're cutting), and then modifying the crossover to fit accordingly ASSUMING it even fits the chassis is a long road to disappointment IMO.

TinSoldier 05-05-2013 05:03 PM

I have a 91 rs that I ran a 76mm on last year. Had my turbo sitting were the battery would normally go and my intercooler was exactly the same location as yours. I have a ton of pics of the kit that I built, I used truck manis But I do have a pinto rack(I drive my car on the street all the time with it.) Scrap the 4th gen kit and buy some u bends it will save you time and money to just build one. I had less than $1000 bucks in my kit and that was with a brand new turbonetics turbo. If you want I can email you a ton of pics of my old set up it was super simple and worked killer. Shoot me an email tinsoldiergarage@gmail.com

Well I'm this far in, I'd like to see how far I can go before Id have to modify the core support for the crossover. If it does come down to the crossover fitting bad then ill scrap the hotside excluding manifolds.

Email sent! I'd love some pictures...
After talking to my dad a bit, he convinced me to go ahead and swap to r&p.
However it'll be a custom power R&P. I've been looking it up and it seems most either do fourth gen or one guy on TGO ended up using one from a 97 thunderbird. IIRC the tie rods were very close when he ran a 17" rim.

Anyways I did end up getting the driver side manifold bolted up without the stock steering linkage in the way.
