Default New turbo build, crazy oil leak.

Alright guys, Im so confused.

I just finished up my turbo build... Fresh rebuilt LQ4, yada yada...

Anyway, I have this BS oil leak on the passenger side.

At first is was pretty minor, just a few drips on the motor mount, and a bit on the K member, and it was smoking, so some definitely hit the manifolds.

but I took it out a bit longer (2 miles) today, with a couple part throttle pulls@15#... well now there is oil everwhere on the passenger side... firewall, bottom of hood, entire strut tower, etc...

The oil pan bolts(Moroso) is tight... The dipstick isnt getting pushed out..

Any ideas? I cannot figure this out...

Sounds like crank case pressure forcing oil out somewhere. This happened to me but was pushing out the rear main seal. I vented the oil cap and walla, no more oil when I go wot. I also have catch cans. What's you pcv setup?

UGH. Pushing out the rear main!!! That sounds like a lot of work... Im so tired of working on this thing... ready to drive it.

I have a -10AN off each valve cover and another off the valley cover. Vented to atmosphere...

It was smoking on my first cruise when I never even hit boost...

I'm betting your block is missing the block off plug for alternate dipstick tube.

Yes. Is this an issue? I never really paid attention... It seemed like that hole just went into the oil pan flange.

I've heard the eBay valve covers don't seal that great and if you are under boost I'd imagine its only going to make things worse. If you drive it around out of boost does it leak much at all?

Dude i had those valve covers and they would rock on a straight surface because they were bowed so bad. My center bolt holes would line up but there would be a 1/8" gap on the back of the head. I could a .004 feeler guage under them too. I sent those pos covers back and my car isn't even done lol. I used my stock covers and had -10an bungs welded on and i wrinkle coated them. They came out awesome. Throw your stcok breathers on for sure.

I would get rid of them valve covers. Sounds to me like there is alot of pressure on one of those oil lines that its making the oil leak out from anywhere possible.

Im not getting any oil out of my -10 atmosphere dumps... Also, there is a lot of oil under the manifolds, and I would imagine the oil wouldn't make it far past the wrapped manifolds without soaking in/burning off.

I will definitely swap the covers, clean up the oil, and see how she does... Ill let you know how it goes.

Lots people like to bash on manufacturers when a turbo goes out without knowing the causes. I have trusted precision turbos for a long time. I guess its just a little worry of mine. -__-"

OP... Keep us updated man. Pretty weird issue you got there, hope it gets fixed soon to see that thing roll out!

Well I am throughly frustrated... and feeling pretty dumb.

I put the stock valve covers on, to eliminate that variable..

I took it out around the block, and came back to even more oil...

I just can't imagine what would cause a leak like this on strictly the passenger side.

I guess the car is just going to have to sit, until I have time to pull the engine... it must be something pretty serious.

The block has a hole in it for a dip stick tube, if it isn't being used ie dipstick tube is in the sump, there must be a core plug fitted to prevent oil spraying out.
New cast blocks often have the plug missing, and if a used block it may have been removed by engine builder when cleaning up the block.

If memory serves me correctly, when i switched from the LS1 in my GTO to the LQ4 i had to get a plug for that hole...

I used my LS1 style moroso pan, i put the dipstick tube in the hole in the side on the block. The only other hole I see would go into the oil pan flange, but it sure looks blocked to me.

but that still doesn't explain why there is so much pressure in the crankcase with my triple -10 breathers.

I took the POS out today for the first time in a couple weeks, put dye in, drove 1/2 mile, came back, there was a gallon of oil in my engine bay. some sprayed on the hood, but not directly over the dipstick. I guess Ill have to powerwash the POS and try an idle only leak check.

I just do not see how there is so much oil, is there some random HVHP output on the LQ4 that I missed? I think Im gonna be forced to pull the engine, but I am not feeling motivated to do that... So i literally might let her sit till winter. :wall:

What valve cover gaskets are you using? Did you replace the gaskets when you put stock valve covers on? Pull the intake and look at the back. It sounds like pressurized oil.
