They said it couldn't be done....

So I've been working on a twin turbo build for approximately 3 years now. I've been needing twin turbo headers but didn't want to fork out $1200 for a pair, disliked the set that stainless works has because they are no where near a match. The passenger side header bends over to the drivers side really hard. I didn't want to take my car to a shop and have an open ended price except time and material and time is $70/hour. So what did I do? I did what they said couldn't be done....I got a set of stainless steel headers off eBay for $280 shipped. Oh and by the way, yes, they are 1 7/8" headers. What had to be done? Simple...cut the header from the flange, take them to a local welder and get them re-welded. Now, granted I have to get the coils relocated but that's really no big deal....you can buy those also for $99 shipped. Here is a picture of the proof.

damn... you d realize that 1 7/8 into 3in is grossly over sized for a turbo setup

HexenLord 01-14-2014 06:58 PM

I actually ended up finding the manifolds I linked earlier on ebay for less than $250 shipped.

I'm not sure I understand what you're doing, OP. What did 'they' say couldn't be done? What had to be modified on the manifolds? You just said the flange and re-weld.

slowlsx 01-14-2014 07:50 PM

Yea... im confused

sschoeffler 01-14-2014 11:42 PM

That's it...re-weld the flange...the oil fill tube will have to be re-welded in the center of the valve cover but other than that, they fit. The header had to turned in toward the head about 1/2" at the flange. Also these eBay headers did not factor in port spacing so one of the vbands sticks out a little further than the other one. This will of course be re-done as well. I was wanting a very nice and symmetrical setup.
As far as who said it couldn't be done, that was Josh @KYturbo when he designed the up and forward turbo headers for stainless works.

Those are the headers I purchased also. I spent $30 more but no big deal. They don't fit out of the box fyi. They must be modified.

LOL and this is why people think they're saving money and they end up spending almost as much as a real set of headers would cost on insufficient garbage

sschoeffler 01-15-2014 03:41 AM

I have $280 in the headers and 120 in welding labor. Show me a set of stainless twin turbo headers for $400

The headers I posted from eBay aren't application specific. Just because they don't fit doesn't mean they are useless junk. I'm sure they would fit in almost any older car, F-body figment is tight.

Nice job. Now dont come back bitchin' when the shitty China tubing cracks.

Exactly!! Turbo headers get extremely hot. That's why everyone uses manifolds including myself. It's stainless that rusts, ie cheap bullshit that will crack when heat cycles a few times.

Add in the required coil relocation. And you are at 500

I went with the SW headers and am glad I did.

They'll be fine for awhile hopefully. Goodluck with your build should work good once you get everything lined out. It would also help putting some braces off the head to maybe delay any stress cracking.

Blackpanther99 01-15-2014 02:10 PM

I hope those headers work out for you man.

x2, let us know when its all finished ... pics.

Well if they crack that means the Huron Speed manifolds/headers will crack as well, since they are China metal.

sschoeffler 01-17-2014 11:13 AM

The other one is getting welded up now. Had to remove the power steering pump and put an electronic pump in. No big deal.

Next thing to be welded is o2 sensor bungs and carry the pipes to the turbos
