Default Anybody Drill/tap oil pan with engine in car?

Has anybody done this? Tips? Buying huron speed turbo kit this week and don't want to pull motor to tap hole for turbo oil line. If i just try and put grease in there to catch the shavings hopefully I'll be okay? And run some cheap oil through before starting to out any loose shavings that could fall in motor. Sound like a good plan or no?

I personally hate the idea! But others will say put 8 quarts of cheap oil in there and pack the drill bit and tap with grease etc...

I dont like it. I wouldnt do it. Timing cover is a great option if you dont wanna pull the motor. I ran with it in the timing cover for awhile

When I think about it though there are only going to be maybe 4-5 threads that get cut so there couldn't be hardely anything that goes in and than drain all the oil out like you said. And if a thread or 2 did happen to get in it shouldn't get past the oil sump filter...

Its not hard to pull the pan. Or do the grease and drain method.

If your motor mounts are out its super easy. Jack the motor up till it hits the tunnel then drop the pan. You can really move it around but it still wont be able to come out unless you have the intake off too. I put newspaper in and just drilled it. Folded the paper and vacuumed it out

I have done it before using my shop vac and grease. Just had my buddy hold the vac right up where I was drilling. I ended up having to pull the motor for something else before starting it up. I pulled the pan and checked for shavings, not a single piece....

I drilled 2 oil returns in the front of the pan on my gto. Drill very slow, keep the bit coated in grease and clean it often.

Above the line where oil sits. You can use a right angle drill and get to most places. Grease and shopvac works.

Doesn't the drain have to be above where the oil sits though? Otherwise it won't gravity feed back into the pan?

that is above the oil line. That's similar to running it in the timing cover. I don't know if there's enough room to have a big enough one drilled in the front though.

What size did you drill it out to?

Ohh okay. Yea I've seen where it has been tapped in the lower timing cover but hadn't seen that spot yet. Also seen where a member tapped the top of the oil pan directly above the oil drain plug, but not sure if thats possible with engine in the car...

I did it on the side of the pan about 3 inches from the oil drain plug. Just used a shop vac and a lot of grease (WD40). Poured some walmart oil in there after and used a strong magnet at the bottom of the pan

Vortech recommends to tap the front drivers corner of the pan right below the gasket surface as close to the corner as possible but still on the front lip of the pan. I did my old car like this with a 9/16th drill bit and used a 3/8npt tap with grease in it. Worked like a charm and I put roughly 50,000 miles on the car over the next 2 years with no problems. I didnt even flush it out with oil after tapping as the grease caught all the shavings. To see a printout of where Im talking about go to vortech's site and look up install manuals for LS1 f body cars.
