Was there actually a gen 4 motor 5.3 in 04? Im reading on these but dont see anywhere that there was a gen4 in 04....

Gen4 5.3L engines first came in 2008, a few 2007. Earlier than that is Gen3 for sure.
However, some 04+ Gen3 have the stronger rods, but there is no way to know for sure. The only way is to unbolt the oil pan, they are easy to recognize.
