Default Starting out on a 5.3 Turbo setup for my 96 Z28...

Already purchased;
  • Update - 02/18/2015 - was going with stock 5.3 heads but due to a mixup, Wiseco pistons will need larger chambers. Found some LS6 heads to keep the static Compression ratio 9.5:1. THEN found some beautiful CNC ported 243's so they're going on the motor.
  • 5.3 Pulled from a fully functioning 2000 Silverado. 90K on the motor.
  • Compstar H-beam rods and Wiseco forged pistons
  • Isky Triple 12 Cam.
  • Front cover conversion (for LS9 cam type)
  • New high volume GM oil pump
  • Brian Tooley dual valve springs
  • ARP studs
  • Stainless Hotside. Single turbo for now, twin setup being welded.
  • Harness to wire the PCM to the motor/dash
  • UMI LS1 Tubular K Member
  • LS1 Rack n pinion/linkage
  • Fbody specific LSx oil pan
  • Stock LS1 Intake
  • Fast Fuel Rails
  • Hughes Ls1 Crank Spacer(between TH350 Torque converter and crank) part# HP3795
  • Huron High mount Alternator bracket
  • New stock GM LS1 Fbody motor mounts

I already have 3 turbo setups.
  • TC76 w/.96 A/R
  • PT7675 w/.96 A/R
  • twin GT35's w/.63 A/R

I have two wastegates
  • Turbosmart 38mm
  • JGS 50mm

Other items I have;
  • Front mounted intercooler (3")
  • 127# Bosch injectors
  • 0411 PCM
  • AEM Truboost controller
  • Aeromotive 340lph and 255lph fuel pumps
  • Tial 50MM blowoff valve
  • Reverse pattern manual valve Transbraked TH350 w/4000 stall vigilante
  • 2 bar map sensor and a 3 bar map sensor
  • HPTuners Pro software

Part numbers I've came across on this effort:
  • Exhaust manifold gaskets: AC DELCO #12617944 (Need 2)

Looking forward to seeing what I can do with this.
Dave

Sounds like this will be a fun setup sir. The 7675 combo has made some really nice power, usually in the upper 600 to 800-ish HP depending on cam, boost psi etc. Subed

Looks like your car ran pretty strong before! Should be able to make a little better power with the 5.3 though! Btw your sig pic is awesome lol. Stock snow flakes with a big *** intercooler. Badass sleeper you have!

Yeah. I had it like that till recently. It was the best way to get people with EVO's, WRX/STI, Skylines, Cobras, GT500s to jump on me. I always whipped them. One guy with a GT500 I pulled away from followed me to the house and wanted to know what the hell I had in my car.

It would be really fun to leave the snow flakes on there and get you a mesh grill to cover the intercooler and really mess with people. Could make some $ with that thing lol!

Thanks! Its due to sites like this that I even found out about the amazing power people are putting down with these, I hate to denigrate such a wonderful motor, junk yard motors and some boost.

Just placed an order for 1/2" Mild Steel header flanges and a box of 2.0# primary piping. As usual, you select the items for your setup thinking, "Hey, these prices are pretty good!" then you click to ship. Gulp..the minimum shipping expense by the slowest available method was almost $50. Oh well, you gotta pay to play... Looking forward to mocking up the hotside. I already have the 1/2" T3 flanges for the twin GT35'S (I really want to try them first). I found a guy that sells a complete plug n play harness for my particular conversion(96 LT1 fbody to 5.3). It's pricey but when I compare how long it would take me to find, pay for and repin a 2000 - 2002 harness against my available time to do some this, the plug and play comes out way better.

A good friend of mine with a 427 nitrous'd LSx in his former LT1 Fbody told me about the guy that made his plug and play harness. Just ordered it...

A bud just found an fbody LS1 K-Member and rack/pinion. Also, pulling the pistons and re-ringing with a larger end gap. Cam is getting degreed. LS7 lifters going in. Pushrod length is being checked.

Since the motor has 90K, we are going to pull the rod/main caps and examine the bearings too.

Yes it is. It's going to be the initial setup till I can weld up the twin turbo setup. I ordered some 1/2" Mild steel 2" port flanges and some 2" mandrel primary piping. I figure at 500 bux, made of stainless, provided I build a support for the PT7675 so the headers aren't bearing the full weight of it, it should be good for at least a short term.

Looking thru the ls1tech classifieds, I found a tubular UMI LS1 K-member, an Fbody, an Fbody alternator, a 3 bar map sensor and an LS1 Fbody power steering pump/bracket/pulley/lines setup. I *think* I'll still need the PS reservoir though.

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. I wish I would have never got rid of my 95 Z28. I prefer the LT1 body style over the LS1. Have fun!

Thanks man, I will try to update as progress is made. Old man winter will be here before too long. Last year, I kept the car in storage for the winter. This year, I may keep it out so I can work on it. Of course, I won't drive it in this salted road environment, but at least I can go do things now and then as time permits. I don't have a garage so it's a kerosene torpedo heater roasting me on one side while on the other I freeze. Lol... I just want to have it set up for next spring. I'm still debating on my tuning options. My local tuner says he can put a perfect 3 bar speed density tune on there, using his chassis dyno to get feedback, for $800. But after that, I'll want to tweak, I'm sure, so I'll need to buy HP tuners. Quite a sum of money for the tune and the software but you have to have it, I know, I know....
