Default crank pinning advice

I have a ATI balancer going on the car with a F1a procharger. The balancer only has one slot for a pin. Is the one single pin horizontal on the snout going to be sufficient? It is a stock crank FYI.

I'm not sure what type of material the pins are made of but is there a reason why it wouldn't be strong enough and I would want to find one made of chromolly or some other hardened material?

The pins are very hard.
It might be worthwhile to put two pins in about a half inch apart. You would have to get creative with the tool.

Also, because I have the tool and ran into this.
Line up the pin location very carefully with the existing key for the timing gear. This will allow you to get the timing gear/oil pump drive on and off w/o removing the pins you just installed.

I believe ATI sells two diff tools and one may already line them up for you.

I would run 2 pins. I had 1 pin and it started to shear off on 14psi
The spot in the ati balancer is for a key way not a pin. Here is the link to the pin kit you need.

I want to run 2 pins but the issue is the ATI balancer only has one slot for a pin to slide in.

I have essentially the same pinning kit. There is still only one slot in the ATI balancer to slide a pin in

The crank doesn't have a key. The metal is too hard to drill through on the balancer from what i gather so there is no way to double pin it.

I have done it a couple times. The drill bit they gave you in the kit will drill through the ati balancer and a crank longer than stock. You are NOT going to use the slot in the ati balancer for the pin. Put the balancer all the way on then then bolt up the ati fixture DO NOT line it up with the key way spot on the balancer and drill your hole

I knew it was long enough. Just thought the material the ati hub was made out of was too strong to drill though. So your saying just drill two pins across from each other at say 12 and 6 with the key provision being at 3 that's not being used. Sound right?

Yes it will drill through. I have keyed a few of them it's not to bad. Like said above. Just put your ballancer all the way on and drill in 2 spots and put your pins in and than install your bolt

Yes that's correct. it's kind of a pain the way the ati balancer is deep to get your pins in but can be done. Also recommend getting a smaller drill as space can be tight and you want to drill straight

i figured the drill bit would try to walk and not drill into the hub but drill into the crank being as its a softer metal

If you have the pinning kit you should have a "jig" and bolt. The jig will keep it straight where it needs to be 50/50 on balancer and crank hub

The motor is out of the car so no worry on space

Oh okay good. I've done it that way as well and it's a piece of cake man! Just run your bolt in jig in and drill on opposite sides and your good to go! If your kit doesn't have directions on how far to drill. Just put your bit against the pin and mark how far u need to drill with a piece of tape or something so you don't go to far

The ATI pinning kit puts the pin in like this:

The key slot in the balancer slides over the pin.

I'm not a fan of those types of pins. I have a buddy break one off.
