Default 1987 Grand National LS Swap with 76mm Turbo

A few months ago, I found this 87 GN in Alabama. The body was solid, but the paint was faded and the car hadn't been started in a few years. A few weeks later, I figured out why. The original V6 had a rod knock. I sold the car to a friend and we strategized on how to proceed. We decided an LS swap was in order.

He removed the engine and began cleaning the car. With a lot of elbow grease, the original paint actually turned out pretty decent!

With some sweat equitity, the car turned out looking like this. He also installed new body bushings, and rebuilt the brakes.

He found a gently used 5.3L and a 4L80E transmission locally. Then it was game on! He is a very good fabricator. The headers were first on the list.

He installed a mild Comp Cams custom grind cam, dual springs, and pushrods, on the SBE 5.3L. For now, it will have the ON 3 Performance 76/75.

Here are the specs at a glance.

FAST XFI 2.0 ECU.
TCI EZ-TCU
FAST 92 mm intake and TB
Walbro/FAST 450 lph fuel pump
FAST 306008 Injectors
Comp Cams custom grind 225/226 .612/.605 114+3 cam
Comp 850-16 Lifters
Comp 26925TS-Kit springs
Comp 7955-16 pushrods
Comp 7106 Timing set
Rebuilt 4L80E transmission
TCI 9.5" torque converter
ON3 Performance 76/75 turbo
CX Racing IC
Custom headers, cold side and hot side
Summit Racing radiator

It should be running in the next 2-3 weeks. The goal is to have a car that can be daily driven, get 20+ mpg, and run 10's at the track (and maybe down at Mexico as well. )

Thanks! I'm excited about it. I'm really looking forward to tuning it!

Over the last few days, Heath got the radiator hoses fab'd, the transmission installed, exhaust installed and got the ECU and TCU mounted.

Looks great so far. Think he'd have any interest in duplicating the Hot side for a cost?

Nice build. I don't know how much boost you all are planning on running. But, I'm thinking Fast intakes crack. You may wanna research it. An LS6 intake may be in order.

Thanks for the input, but you're thinking of the early FAST 90mm intakes. The 92mm FAST intakes are an all new design and do not crack.

Thanks!

I love most things LS swapped, but a grand national with a turbo LS swap takes the cake. Going to be a fun car for sure!
