Default welding stainless sch10 elbow to ls3 manifolds

I cut the flanges off of a set of ls3 Camaro manifolds and installed them forward facing on my 67 mustang build. I have searched all over the internet for a supplier that sells individual carbon steel 2.5" elbows and cannot find any for sale. Individual stainless fittings are more easily found.

what complications will I run into if I weld a stainless elbow to my manifold assuming I used a 309L mig wire and pre heat the manifold with a torch. will the stainless elbow fatigue over time form heat?

adding an elbow, then a V band will give me a perfect exhaust outlet level with the oil pan.

I am not sure what elbow you are looking for but I found all of my schedule 40 mild steel fittings at a local pipe retailer. Prices were great and I used a couple 2.5" 45's and a 90. One of the 45's I welded onto the end of a cutoff truck manifold. It was perfect.

Not to spark a debate here but I will share my personal experience miging 309l with C25 I had a hell of a time getting the welds to look decent. In fact I never did. I burned the pieces together and ground them afterwards. I did a bunch of searching and the more I read the more I am seeing this is fairly normal using that wire. I wish someone had told me that as I was pretty disappointed with the results and super frustrated while welding it.

Use 2" instead. The ID is 2.157 and will support well over 1000. I use 304 Sch 10.

Are the manifolds SS? Do you plan on bracing the turbos?

It seems that despite the manifolds being cast...almost anything will weld to them, with any type of welder.

Which is handy.

thanks for the replies!

i happened to find carbon steel elbows on McMaster-Carr's website. i will get a few 2'' elbows and see what i can do.

since the manifolds point downward at a 90* angle i was going to weld another 90* elbow to them so i can have forward facing v band outlets that will sit just about even with the oil pan. I will mount the turbo on the passenger side of the car and run a cross over from the drivers side past the balancer and up into the turbo.

I migged mine with 308ERL wire and they are holding up fine. You should pick up a TIG torch. IMO it is far easier to TIG than MIG. Also i thought the LS3 manifolds where SS?

I bought some 2.5 long radius mild steel elbows from a local pipe supply. cant beat $7 each! i also ordered some mild steel 2.5 v bands and miged my manifolds today with .035 wire and a heavy heat setting. My dad and i preheated everything with a torch. Here are the results.

i can also run the manifolds the other way and they will clear the stock steering box.

BTW, this is in a 67 mustang with the stock steering setup!
